Pacers Drop Heartbreaker At No. 11 Carson-Newman

Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, TN.--USC Aiken fell to eleventh ranked Carson-Newman College, 53-52, Saturday night in Jefferson City, Tenn.  Calvin Owen's jumper from the right wing with two seconds left in the game gave the Eagles the win.
Dustin Edwards had a chance to put the Eagles ahead by four points with 40 seconds left in the game, but he missed two free throws and the Pacers got the ball trailing 51-49.  Bryant Latimer hit a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to give USCA a one point lead, 52-51.  Following Owen's shot that put Carson-Newman ahead, the Pacers inbounded the ball toEric Dugans at mid-court.  The senior guard took three steps and tried to put up a shot but it was blocked as the horn sounded.
Latimer scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from behind the three-point arch.  The junior also grabbed four rebounds and picked up four steals.  Edwards, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 boards against the Pacers in a November meeting at "The Courthouse," finished the night with a team-high eight points and eight rebounds.
A 6-0 run by the Pacers midway through the second half gave USC Aiken their largest lead of the game, 39-34, with 11:43 left to play.  Mira Jonuska scored four of the six Pacer points.  The senior center, who entered the game having scored only 10 points all season, finished the night with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from the free throw line.  He also brought down four rebounds and had two steals.
Two free throws by Edwards gave the Eagles a 44-42 lead with 8:26 remaining.  Dugans followed with a jumper and Mitch Lewis drilled a three-pointer to put the Pacers back out in front, 47-44, with 7:31 left on the clock.  Todd Williams blocked Kyle Gribble's shot on the other end, Dugans came out with the rebound and the Pacers had a chance to add to their lead.  However, a Pacer turnover gave the ball back to Carson-Newman.
After Lewis' trey the Pacers went 5:07 without scoring as the Eagles scored six unanswered.  Carson-Newman's run was capped by a three-pointer by Gribble that put the Eagles ahead 50-47 with 2:40 left to play.  Gribble, a pre-season all-conference and all-American selection, had hit just one shot from the field and had scored only four points before knocking down the three-point basket.  The senior finished the game with seven points, six rebounds and one assist.
Williams' lay-up with 2:23 remaining ended the drought for USC Aiken and cut the Carson-Newman lead to 50-49.  Edwards hit his second of two free throw attempts to give the Eagles a two point lead, 51-49, with 2:04 to play.
For the game, USC Aiken shot 46.7 percent (21-for-45) from the field, 50 percent (5-for-10) from behind the three-point arch and 55.6 percent (5-for9) from the charity stripe.  The Eagles were held to 31.3 percent (15-for-48) shooting from the field, 21.1 percent (4-for-19) from three-point land and 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the free throw line.  The Pacers were out rebounded 40-27.  The score was tied eight times throughout the game and there were 14 lead changes.
Terell Turner's three-pointer gave Carson-Newman its largest lead of the game, seven points, at 11-4 with 11:40 left in the first half.  A Latimer lay-up cut the lead to three, 14-11, with 7:36 to play in the first.  A jumper by Owen gave the Eagles their second seven-point lead, 18-11, with 6:32 on the clock.
A 12-5 USC Aiken run, capped by a Lewis three-point basket, tied the score at 23 with 1:30 to go before intermission.  Two free throws 13 seconds later by Lee Burton made it a 14-5 run and gave the Pacers their first lead of the game, 25-23. Burton, the team's leading scorer, had just five points to go along with five rebounds on the night.  Ishmail Simmons hit two free throws with 25 seconds left in the half to set the halftime score at 27-25.
The Pacers will be in action again on Tuesday when they face their final non-conference opponent of the season.  USC Aiken will travel to Wingate, N.C., to play Wingate University at 7:00 p.m.
