Box Score AIKEN, SC--After posting a 20-8 victory the night before, USCA (13-8) looked to continue its three-game winning streak against Lincoln Memorial (14-3). However, the Railsplitters scored seven runs in two innings, posting a 9-7 victory in the first of a three game series.
Pacer
Anthony Marchioli started the game on a torrid pace, striking out seven of the first eight batters. The Pacers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as
Bradley Key doubled and
Clint Keown scored from third on a wild pitch by Railsplitter pitcher
Sammy Carter. In the first two-and-two thirds innings, Marchioli mowed sat down nine Rails with strikeouts.
Things looked positive for the Pacers going into the third inning, but LMU found away to hit
Marchioli as it posted two runs in the inning, to taking a 2-1 lead. The Pacers tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by
Ashley Farr to tie the game.
Things began to go downhill for
Marchioli and the Pacers in the fifth inning as LMU tallied three runs on three hits. A leadoff homer by
Aaron Geiser started the inning for the Railsplitters.
LMU posted four runs in the next frame on four hits, including a double by
Wade Vincent, his second two-bagger of the night, scoring two runs. Head coach
Kenny Thomas had seen enough as
Matt Ockuly came in relief of
Marchioli.
USCA came back in the seventh with two runs on a double to left field by
Farr, cutting the deficit to 9-4. In the eighth,
Lee Cromercame into the game for the Pacers and shutdown the Rails in their half of the inning.
The Pacers had just six outs left and almost made the comeback, scoring three times in the eighth on a three run blast by
Demetrick Drumming, cutting the deficit to 9-7. The Pacers were unable to get any closer and LMU brought in its closer
Ted Brobst to finish off the eighth and ninth innings for the victory.
Marchioli (2-4) went five and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits, eight runs, all earned two walks and career-high 13 strikeouts.
Carter (5-0) kept his perfect record in seven innings of work, allowing eight hits four earned runs, seven walks and only three strikeouts.
These two teams will meet tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at J.H. Satcher Field.
