Jason Nuzny tossed a complete game shutout in the rubber match of USC Aiken's three-game Peach Belt Conference baseball series at USC Spartanburg on Saturday evening. The Pacers (20-13, 7-8 PBC) took game three 6-0 after splitting a pair of 10-inning games 11-8 and 13-14 with the Rifles (9-21, 3-14 PBC).
USCA got on the board early with a four-run second inning.
Ashley Morgan smacked his fourth triple of the season with one out and the bases loaded, scoring
Ashley Farr,
Bradley Key, and
Tony Hanks to push the Pacers in front 3-0.
Clint Keown added an RBI single bringing in
Morgan to make it 4-0.
Michael Snelgrove doubled home
Hanks and
Keown singled in
Snelgrove in the fourth to extend the Pacers lead to 6-0.
Nuzny (3-4) scattered five hits over 7.0 innings giving up one walk and striking out seven in the win.
Nate Frommelt and
Chris Nowak both turned in 2-for-3 outings for USC Spartanburg, but the rest of the team managed just one hit.
Tim Gray (1-5) surrendered all six runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks in notching the loss for the Rifles.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Pacers took a 12-8 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not fend off a late Rifle attack as USCS posted four runs in the inning to knot the game at 12-12. Both teams traded runs in the ninth to push the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th with the score tied 13-13, Rifles' catcher
Jim Kais singled home
Zach Huckabay for the winning run. The win snapped USCS' four-game losing streak to USC Aiken.
???????Nuzny came on in relief in the 10th and gave up three hits and the game winning run in 0.1 of an inning to earn the loss. In total, USCA used eight pitchers in the 4:10 affair.
Cummings was 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBI while
Keown also tallied three hits and scored two runs.
Hanks was 2-for-5 but hit his sixth homer of the season in the fifth inning.
???????Frommelt's perfect 4-for-4 performance with two doubles and three runs scored led USC Spartanburg. On the hill,
Brandon Wilson(2-4) worked the final 2.2 innings allowing one earned run on two hits striking out three for the win.
In the first game of the series played Friday night at Duncan Park, USC Aiken rallied for an 11-8 win over USC Spartanburg. The Pacers trailed 8-6 heading into the eighth inning.
Langley's RBI double brought USCA within one run and then
Farr's leadoff homer in the ninth forced the extra frame.
In the 10th,
Langley's RBI triple scored Snelgrove and provided the Pacers with the winning run.
Langley was 3-for-6 with two RBI and one run scored.
Cummings and
Snelgrove each added three-hit nights and combined to drive in three runs.
Senior
Mitch Hearne (4-0) pitched 4.0 solid innings allowing no runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three in picking up his fourth win of the season.
USC Aiken returns home to J.H. Satcher Field to host West Virginia Tech in a two-game series starting Tuesday, March 26 at 6:00 PM.
