Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC--The fourth-ranked Georgia College & State University Bobcats (9-0, 2-0 PBC) remained perfect on the 2002 season as they opened up Peach Belt Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of USC Aiken (4-5, 0-2 PBC) on Saturday afternoon in Aiken. The Bobcats posted wins of 7-1 and 9-5 in the conference opener for both teams.
Michael Joyce (3-0) was the story of game one holding a potent Pacer lineup to just one unearned run on five hits over 7.2 innings for his third win of the season. The Pacers threatened in the first when
Leroy Walker led off with a single. He was erased, however, when caught stealing on the next pitch.
Tavis Cummings then drew a walk, but
Joyce settled down getting
Bradley Key to strike out and
Ashley Farr to line out.
Starting with the final out of the fourth inning,
Joyce retired the next 13 batters he faced.
Cummings bunt single with one out in the eighth was the first baserunner to reach in nearly four innings for USCA.
Joyce finished with seven strikeouts.
Jason Nuzny (0-2) pitched well for USCA despite giving up five earned runs on 14 hits over 8.1 innings.
Nuzny always seemed to find his way out of a jam but failed to get any offensive support. The junior lefthander held the Bobcats to three runs through six complete innings, striking out five and walking one.
Cummings recorded two of USCA's five hits while
Casey Calhoun drove in Farr for the Pacers' only run of the game.
Christian Corvos was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for GC&SU.
Gary Harris, the leadoff hitter for the Bobcats, was also 3-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored.
Jason Samples made some outstanding defensive plays at shortstop while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of stolen bases.
Unlike game one, the Pacers' offense came to play in game two, which witnessed the lead change hands five times.
Corvos again punished the Pacers with an RBI single in the first inning to push the Bobcats in front 1-0.
Anthony Marchioli (1-2) worked 4.1 innings scattering three hits and five walks. He allowed six runs, but just three earned, while striking out three in notching his second straight loss.
USCA took a lead for the first time in the series in the bottom of the first. A balk by
Brian Bulger scored
Walker from third.
Key then doubled to right field to score
Cummings and make it 2-1. The Pacers still had the bases loaded with just one out when
Mike Cunningham lined to
Brett Lathem at first for an unassisted double play.
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the second as the Pacers again watched
Corvos hurt them, this time with a bases cleared double to right center.
Corvos finished 2-for-3 with five RBI in game two, giving him eight on the day.
Jon Chappell's home run off
Mitch Hearne in the sixth inning would ice the game for the Bobcats.
Cummings,
Walker,
Farr, and
Ashley Morgan all registered two-hit games for USC Aiken.
John Belflower (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for GC&SU working 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
???????USCA and GC&SU will play the final game of the series on Sunday, February 17 at 2:00 PM at J.H. Satcher Field.
