Pacers Split Doubleheader Friday

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The USCA softball team split a doubleheader at Lander on Friday, falling 9-1 before winning 6-3 in the nightcap.

The Pacers are now 26-23 on the season, including 10-13 in PBC play.

Head coach Jaclin Poole's team tried to get things going in the top of the first. With one down, Autumn Fisher recorded an infield single. Kate Newberry's base hit put runners on first and second. Madilyn Rouse reached on an error, loading the bases. However, a double play ended the threat.

Down 4-0 in the second, Abbie Kegley garnered an infield single and moved to second on a base knock from Mollie Rollings. However, a fly ball ended the stanza. USCA left a runner stranded in the third.

Trailing 7-0 in the fifth, Rollings belted a lead-off double and moved to third on a groundout. Rouse plated Rollings on a base knock up the middle. The Pacers had a chance to slice into the deficit, but a groundout concluded the inning with the bases loaded.

For the game, Fisher and Rollings had two hits apiece. Rollings had a double while Rouse drove in Rollings. Kegley, Newberry, Rouse and Chloe Webb all had one hit apiece.

In the circle, Kegley went the distance and had five strikeouts.

Game two saw Poole's team jump on top in the first inning. Fisher belted a 2-1 pitch down the right field line for a triple. Lydia Johnson's bunt single allowed Fisher to score for a 1-0 lead.

The Pacers extended the margin in the second. Webb singled up the middle as did Newberry. A sacrifice bunt pushed both runners up a bag. Gracie Walker reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Web to score. With the bases loaded, Johnson drew a walk, driving in Newberry. Alexis Stout rocketed a 1-2 pitch into center field, driving in Walker and Fisher for a 5-0 cushion.

USCA added to the lead in the fifth. Rouse reached on a miscue and took second on a fly ball. Two batters later, Rollings reached on an error, allowing Rouse to race home for a 6-0 margin.

Lander scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for the final tally.

For the game, Fisher had a triple, double and single while scoring twice. Webb posted two hits and scored. Johnson and Stout had two RBI apiece while Gracie Walker drove in a run. Newberry, Rouse and Walker all scored.

In the circle, Ally Fleming tossed a complete game. She gave up three runs on seven hits on 111 pitches. Fleming posted three strikeouts in the victory.
