AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA baseball team picked up a 13-0 win over Claflin Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 24-9 on the season, including 12-5 in PBC play.
Head coach
Keith Gorman's squad jumped on top with five runs in the bottom of the first.
Chancellor Jennings drew a one-out walk and swiftly stole second.
Yariel Diaz reached on an error, allowing Jennings to move to third. With two outs,
Salvatore Laimo doubled home both runners.
Maverick Grigsby's base hit drove in Laimo. After
Joshua Johnson walked,
Ryan Becker recorded a base hit, driving in Grigsby.
Osmin Melendez's single to center field plated Johnson for a 5-0 edge.
In the second, Jennings singled, moved to second on a walk to Diaz and took third on an error.
Blake Martin singled home Jennings. Laimo's base hit drove in Diaz while Grigsby's single scored Martin for an 8-0 cushion.
With the score still at 8-0 in the fourth, Becker posted a one-out single. Melendez reached on a fielder's choice and an error put Becker on second.
Evan Harding was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Two batters later, Diaz singled in Melendez and Harding for a 10-0 advantage. Martin's base knock allowed Jennings and Diaz to cross home for a 12-0 lead. USCA tacked on a run in the fifth on an error, which allowed Harding to add the 13
th run.
For the game, Diaz had two hits, two RBI and scored three times. Laimo drove in three and scored on two hits. Becker, Grigsby and Martin had two hits apiece. Grigsby and Martin each drove in two. Jennings crossed home three times.
On the mound,
Ben Shepherd got the start and worked two innings.
Ron Robinson threw three innings and had four strikeouts.
Landon Boyd had two strikeouts in an inning of work while
Jacob Butler notched a strikeout while throwing the seventh inning. The staff combined for a one-hit shutout.
