BEAUFORT, S.C. – The USCA baseball team scored nine runs in the fifth inning in the 13-2 win at USC Beaufort on Saturday.
The Pacers are now 21-8 on the season, including 10-4 in PBC play.
Head coach
Keith Gorman's team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Evan Harding led off the frame with a double and moved to third on a fly ball. Two batters later,
Blake Martin's groundout allowed Harding to score.
With one down in the second,
Maverick Grigsby singled and moved to third after a wild pitch and passed ball.
Cameron Austin Jr., walked before a wild pitch allowed Grigsby to race home. Two batters later, Harding singled home Austin Jr.
Chancellor Jennings' sacrifice fly allowed
Osmin Melendez to race home. Melendez had been hit by a pitch moments earlier.
USCA broke open the game in the fifth.
Yariel Diaz drew a lead-off walk and moved to third when
Blake Martin reached on an error.
Salvatore Laimo singled in Diaz and Martin for a 6-1 edge.
Laimo swiped second and scored on
Johann Rodriguez's base hit to right field. With Rodriguez on second, Austin Jr., drew a walk. Melendez loaded the bases with an infield hit and Harding drove in two. Jennings tripled to right field, plating Melendez and Harding for an 11-1 cushion. Diaz doubled home Jennings before Martin's base knock to left plated Diaz for a 13-1 advantage.
For the game, Harding led the way with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Diaz and Laimo each had two hits and Diaz crossed home twice. Jennings tripled and knocked in three runs while Martin drove in two. Austin Jr., and Melendez each scored twice.
On the mound,
Ben Shepherd got the start and struck out seven in 4.1 innings.
Reed Stygles tossed a frame and had a pair of strikeouts.
Jacob Butler worked the final 1.2 innings and had a pair of strikeouts.
