Pacers Knock Off Saints

AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to stave off Flagler in the 62-55 win Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 7-15 on the season, including 4-10 in PBC play.

Head coach Brittany Batts' team was paced by Mackenna Nix's game-high 19-point effort. Morgan McDermott and Mahkayla Premo had 13 points apiece. Ioanna Stefanaki tallied eight points, six boards and a pair of blocks.

Zenia Palaska tallied four points and four rebounds while Destiny Harman accounted for three points. Monique Emelifeonwu posted two points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Defensively, Nix recorded a career-high six steals.

USCA jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four free throws by Nix. Tied at 9-9, Palaska hit a jumper before Nix canned a charity toss. Field goals by Stefanaki and Nix pushed the Pacers' lead to 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Two free throws by Premo pushed the margin to 20-15 at the 7:54 mark as USCA held a 24-22 edge at the half.

After Flagler took a 44-43 lead, Batts' squad ripped off five straight points. Up 47-45, McDermott found Nix for a three-ball, extending the advantage to five, 50-45, at the 3:51 mark. Holding a 52-50 edge, Nix sliced through three defenders for a lay-up with 1:40 remaining.

The Saints made it a two-point game, but McDermott drilled a three-point bucket from the top of the key with just under a minute to play for a 57-52 margin. Flagler sliced the deficit to three with 42 ticks on the clock.

Nix was fouled in the post with 27 seconds remaining and hit one of two. The Pacers were whistled for a foul and the Saints made one-of-two, making it 58-55. Premo drained three free throws down the stretch and Stefanaki finished off the scoring with a charity toss, sealing the victory.

For the game, USCA hit 18-of-61 from the floor. The team buried six shots from distance and hit 20-of-25 from the charity stripe. The Pacers had 33 boards, including seven on the offensive glass. The Pacers registered 10 steals and had eight blocks. USCA had 12 points off 23 turnovers and registered 28 points off the bench.
