DAHLONEGA, Ga. –
Monique Emelifeonwu's five blocks propelled the standout to 85 on the year, establishing a single-season Division II school record in the USCA women's basketball team's 76-50 loss at North Georgia.
The Pacers are now 6-15 on the season including 3-10 in PBC play.
Head coach
Brittany Batts' team was paced by Emelifeonwu's 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
Mackenna Nix added 10 points and four rebounds while
Destiny Harman tallied eight points.
Ioanna Stefanaki had seven points.
Morgan McDermott totaled four points while
Makaylei Snyder and
Nika Kurdija had three points apiece.
Mahkayla Premo chipped in two points.
Zenia Palaska totaled six rebounds.
USCA jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a pair of baskets from McDermott. She found Stefanaki for a jumper, pulling the squad within one, 9-8. Another basket from Stefanaki, this time off a pass from Nix, made it 12-11 in favor of the home team with 1:19 to play in the first quarter. The Nighthawks tallied five points in the final 56 seconds for a 17-11 edge entering the second period.
The Pacers pulled within four – once at 17-13 and again at 19-15 – off field goals from Emelifeonwu and Nix. Snyder buried a three-ball at the 7:51 mark, slicing the deficit to 21-18. Trailing 36-18, Emelifeonwu connected on a pair of shots in the lane, but UNG maintained a 39-22 advantage at the break.
The Pacers opened the third stanza with a 5-0 spurt, but UNG countered. With the score at 59-31, Emelifeonwu started a run for the visitors with a jumper off a pass from Snyder. Harman took a pass from Nix and drilled a three-ball. Nix and Stefanaki made baskets off passes from Palaska and Snyder, respectively, but the Pacers trailed 61-42 at the end of the third.
Batts' team continued to play hard. However, the team was unable to slice into the deficit. Harman's three-point bucket at the 5:31 mark made it 71-50.
For the game, USCA hit 21-of-55 from the floor. The team drained five shots from downtown and made three-of-five from the charity stripe. The squad grabbed 30 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. USCA dished out 17 assists and netted 28 points in the paint.
