Rivers Posts Career High Against Sand Sharks

BEAUFORT, S.C. – The USCA men's basketball team dropped an 83-71 decision at USC Beaufort Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 9-10 on the season, including 4-7 in PBC action.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team was guided by a career-high effort from McCaskill Rivers. He poured in 26 points and added eight boards. Jonah Lawrence narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Caleb Byrd tallied 13 points and seven rebounds while Josiah Harding added 10 points.

Chedlet Delva had four points to go along with 10 rebounds. Jackson Roberts had two points. Montraivis White dished out a pair of assists.

A three-pointer by Byrd and a lay-up from Rivers knotted the score at 7-7. Down by five, White found Roberts for a bucket in the lane. Trailing by 14, Lawrence hit Rivers for a bucket. With 7:14 to play, Rivers nailed a turnaround jumper, slicing the deficit to 10, 25-15.

USCA embarked on a 6-0 run with field goals from Rivers and Harding, pulling the squad within 10 once again, 35-25. Lawrence's old-fashioned three-point play made it 41-33 with eight seconds to play, but the Sand Sharks hit a twisting bucket in the lane at the buzzer for a 10-point margin.

The home squad held a 72-50 advantage with nine minutes to play. Byrd soared past the defense for a pair of lay-ups, making it 72-54. Trailing 76-56, White found Harding for a three-point bucket. Harding hit a free throw with 6:27 to play. Lawrence registered a three-point play before Rivers' lay-up sliced the deficit to 11, 76-65, with 4:52 remaining.

Rivers made a jumper for his 26th point at the 2:13 mark, bringing the score to 83-69.

For the game, USCA made 26-of-62 attempts from the floor. The squad made three shots from downtown. Vanderslice's team canned 16-of-22 from the charity stripe and held a 43-35 edge on the glass. The Pacers grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 12 second chance points. USCA netted 40 points in the paint.
