AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA men's basketball team used a 15-0 run late in the game to take the lead for good in the 90-79 victory over Clayton State Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 9-8 on the season, including 4-5 in PBC play.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's squad was led by
Jonah Lawrence's career-high 29 points.
McCaskill Rivers poured in a career-best 25 points while
Caleb Byrd chipped in 17 markers.
Chedlet Delva totaled a career-high nine points.
Brock Cherry and
Josiah Harding had three points apiece while
Jackson Roberts and
Montraivis White tallied two points each.
Lawrence totaled nine rebounds while Delva and Rivers had seven apiece. Lawrence dished out four assists and had two steals.
Clayton State held the lead for much of the first half after a brief 4-2 lead by USCA on a basket from Rivers. The Lakers built a 13-point margin before Vanderslice's squad took a 34-32 lead after back-to-back buckets from Lawrence. However, CSU held a 41-37 advantage at the break.
Down 58-45, Byrd converted an inside shot. Trailing 63-53, Rivers made an old-fashioned three-point play. He added two free throws to make it a five-point contest.
With the Lakers holding a 72-65 edge, Rivers took a pass from Delva for a lay-up. Delva hit a free throw and Lawrence made two. Rivers' jumper tied the game at 72-72 at the 5:28 mark. Byrd and Lawrence drilled three-point buckets off passes from Delva and White. Lawrence's jumper extended the margin to eight, 80-72. Delva's emphatic dunk pushed the lead to 10 and White's jumper pushed the advantage to 11, 86-75, en route to the victory.
For the game, USCA hit 32-of-59 from the floor, including seven-of-18 from downtown. The team hit 19-of-26 from the charity stripe. USCA held a 36-32 edge on the glass. Vanderslice's squad dished out 13 assists. The team had 42 points in the paint and scored 12 points off nine miscues.
USCA returns to action Wednesday when they host Georgia Southwestern at 7:30 p.m. It has been designated a White-Out game. The first 50 students in attendance will receive a free t-shirt. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
