USCA Splits On Final Day Of Bulldog Classic

WINGATE, N.C. – The USCA volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, downing Coker 3-1 before falling to Wingate 3-0.

The Pacers are now 1-2 on the season.

Against Coker, head coach Glenn Cox's team was led by Anna Sommer's career-high tying 18 kills. She added seven digs for good measure. Lexi Rogers notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Ana Cate Loftus posted 10 kills and a career-best 18 digs for a double-double while Alli Bishop totaled 10 kills. Avery Pearson chipped in six kills in the win.

Sidney Hogan dished out 31 assists while Madison Fox added 23.

Defensively, Kira Bostick garnered 16 digs. At the net, Pearson and Sommer had two blocks apiece.

Tied at 11-11 in the first set, Sommer and Loftus posted back-to-back kills. Up 13-12, Loftus recorded a kill. After a miscue by the visitors, Kadence Livingston found the court for a point. A block from Sommer and kills from Livingston and Sommer extended the margin to seven, 19-12. Holding a 22-19 edge, Rogers took a pass from Fox and registered a kill. Alli Bishop tallied a solo block and ended the set with a kill two plays later for the 25-20 win.

Down 10-6 in the second frame, Bishop started a 3-0 run with a kill. Rogers served up an ace before Pearson recorded a solo block. Moments later, Rogers accounted for a kill and an error by Coker pushed USCA's advantage to 14-12. After a time-out, Hogan served up a pair of aces en route to an 18-12 lead. Leading 20-15, Pearson and Rogers garnered kills. The Cobras pulled within four at 24-20, but Loftus wrapped up the set with a kill.

After dropping the third set 25-16, Cox's team closed out the match with a 25-17 victory in the fourth stanza.

Holding a 13-11 edge, Sommer recorded a kill. Up 14-12, Loftus, Chloe Duzenack and Sommer had back-to-back-to-back kills. Two points from Rogers pushed the score to 20-15. Leading 23-17, an error by the Cobras and an ace from Bostick closed out the first win of the season for USCA.

Against Wingate, Bishop and Loftus led the way with nine kills apiece. Rogers added four while Sommer chipped in three. Bishop and Sommer had four blocks apiece. Fox and Hogan dished out 14 assists each.

Bostick led the defense with nine digs. Bailey Corrigan, Fox and Sommer had six kills each while Loftus totaled five.

Down 11-9 in the first set, Sommer and Rogers posted kills, tying the frame at 11-11. WU managed to take a 24-14 lead before Bishop posted back-to-back points off passes from Fox. However, the Bulldogs secured the first set 25-17.

Trailing 10-5 in the second stanza, Loftus secured a point and an attack error by the home team made it 10-7. Moments later, Sommer pulled the visitors within three at 14-11, WU extended the lead to 10 before a service error cut the deficit to 23-14. Bishop and Sommer combined for a block and Bishop posted a kill, but the Bulldogs took the set 25-16.

With the score at 6-5 in the third frame, Bishop and Pearson combined for a block. Loftus propelled the Pacers to a 7-6 lead with a kill. Two attack errors by the home team gave Cox's group a 9-6 edge. Tied at 11-11, two miscues by WU pushed the score to 13-11. Bishop and Sommer teamed up for a block and Loftus added a kill for a 15-12 advantage. The Bulldogs went on a 10-1 run. Late in the set, Tucker Patterson and Bishop posted kills, but WU closed it out with a point for the 25-19 victory.

The Pacers return to action Friday when they host the USCA Invitational. The team takes on Mount Olive at 11 a.m., before hosting Carson-Newman at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
