GREENWOOD, S.C. – The USCA baseball team knocked off Flagler Saturday evening 10-9, advancing to face Georgia College in the late night contest.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth, the game was suspended due to lightning. The teams will resume action Sunday at 12 p.m.
Against Flagler, head coach
Michael Holder's team jumped on top with four runs in the top of the first. Standout
Josh Sharp walked, stole second and went to third on an errant throw. He scored on a base hit by
Capers Molinaroli.
Hunter Thompson drew a walk, and a wild pitch pushed both runners up a base.
Jack Hobson ripped a single up the middle, driving in Molinaroli for a 2-0 edge.
After a sacrifice fly by
Donovan Glisson plated Thompson, Hobson stole second and hustled to third on a groundout. A wild pitch allowed Hobson to race home for a four-run cushion.
Tyler Casciato led off the second with a single and took second on a
JB Bell bunt base hit. Sharp laid down a bunt single to load the bags for Molinaroli, who hit a ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, driving in Casciato.
Leading 5-1 in the third,
Brody Yeomans tallied a one-out triple to center field and scored on a single by
Kaden Usry. Casciato singled and Bell walked to load the bases. Sharp promptly rocketed a pitch through the right side of the infield for an 8-1 advantage.
Glisson scored a run in the fourth when Bell reached on an error for an eight-run margin. He led off the stanza with a single before moving to third on a pair of wild pitches.
The Saints plated two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the eighth to knot the score at 9-9.
In the 10
th, Sharp led off the frame with a base knock through the right side of the infield and once again swiped second base. Molinaroli's base knock sent Sharp to third. Thompson reached on a fielder's choice and Sharp scored on a throwing error for a 10-9 lead.
For the game, Sharp had three hits, drove in two, swiped two bags and scored twice.
Tyler Casciato had three hits and scored twice. Molinaroli had a two-hit game, drove in two and scored.
Brody Yeomans had the team's lone extra-base hit with a triple.
On the mound,
Blayne Newman got the start for the second consecutive outing and went five innings. He gave up four runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts and a walk.
Jared Huse threw two-thirds of an inning before
Damien Ashley worked a frame.
Cole Evilsizor tossed the final 3.1 innings and had a strikeout to get the win.
USCA took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first against the Bobcats as Sharp led off the game with a single, swiped second and moved to third on an error. He trotted home on a Molinaroli double to right center field.
Georgia College scored two runs in the first and one in the third for the 3-1 advantage. With
Jack Hobson at the plate, the game was halted due to lightning.
