AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA baseball team registered a 4-3 win over Georgia Southwestern Friday evening in the first game of the series.
The Pacers are now 12-8 overall, including 4-0 in PBC play.
Head coach
Michael Holder's team jumped on top in the bottom of the first frame.
Griffin Rowe led off the stanza with a single up the middle before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Hunter Thompson registered a base hit through the right side of the infield, plating Rowe for an early 1-0 advantage.
The Hurricanes tied it in the top of the second. In the top of the seventh, USCA made a tremendous defensive play to end the threat. With runners on first and second, a base hit went to center field.
Josh Sharp fired the ball to
Eliud Poventud, who tagged the runner who was heading back to the bag at second base. The tag occurred just before the Hurricanes' base runner crossed home, ending the threat.
The Pacers broke through in the bottom of the stanza.
Donovan Glisson blistered an offering to left center field and moved to third on
Brody Yeomans' single to center field.
Jack Hobson ripped a pitch up the middle, driving in Glisson. A bases loaded walk to Sharp pushed across Hobson for a two-run cushion.
Hunter Thompson increased the margin to three when he launched a solo home run over the right center field wall on the first pitch of the eighth inning.
For the game, Thompson had two hits, including a homer, drove in two and scored. Glisson and Poventud also had two hits in the contest.
On the mound,
Blayne Newman got the start and went 5.1 innings. He gave up one run and had nine strikeouts.
Damien Ashley worked 2.2 frames and had a strikeout to get the win.
Cole Evilsizor worked the ninth frame to get the save.
