ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The USCA baseball team finished off the sweep of Claflin after winning both games of the doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 19-13 and 9-0.
The Pacers are now 11-7 overall, including a 3-0 ledger in PBC play.
Head coach
Michael Holder's team found itself in a 4-0 hole in the second stanza.
Jack Hobson got things going with a solo blast. After
Tyler Casciato singled,
Josh Sharp rocketed a triple to center field.
Capers Molinaroli doubled him home to make it 4-3.
Down 9-3 in the third, Hobson doubled home
Donovan Glisson and
Griffin Rowe, pulling the Pacers within four at 9-5. In the fourth, Molinaroli was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a
Hunter Thompson fielder's choice. Molinaroli scored when Glisson reached on an error. Thompson crossed home plate when
Brody Yeomans groundout out to second base.
Trailing 13-7 in the eighth inning, Yeomans crushed an offering, driving in Glisson while pulling USCA within four.
Holder's team erupted for 10 runs in the ninth inning, securing the victory. Thompson blasted a two-run homer, driving in
Cannon Frost, who had entered as a pinch runner for Molinaroli. Glisson and Yeomans singled. Rowe smacked an offering over the wall for a three-run shot, propelling the Pacers to a 14-13 lead.
With the bases loaded, Sharp drew a walk. Frost was hit by a pitch, making it 16-13. After
Gage Kirkland and Sharp scored, Yeomans drove in Frost with a base hit, capping off the frame.
For the game, Glisson posted four hits and scored three times. Yeomans had three hits, four RBI and crossed home twice. Sharp, Molinaroli, Rowe, Hobson and Casciato had two hits apiece. Hobson and Rowe drove in three each while Thompson and Sharp each knocked in two.
On the mound,
Logan Wise got the start and had five strikeouts.
Connor Sampers had three strikeouts.
Jared Huse tossed five frames and had six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Game two saw Holder's team break through in the third frame.
Wyatt McPherson walked and moved to third when Sharp reached on an error. Molinaroli plated both teammates with a single up the middle.
The game stayed at 2-0 until the seventh. McPherson doubled to center field and trotted home when Sharp belted a two-run shot over right center field. Thompson was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a wild pitch. With the bags loaded,
Ethan Hall was hit by a pitch, driving in Rowe.
A wild pitch and a bases loaded hit by pitch pushed the score to 8-0. A walk to Sharp with the bases loaded made it 9-0.
For the game, Rowe led the way with two hits. Sharp had three RBI while Molinaroli had two. Sharp scored twice in the win.
On the mound,
Cade Bouknight was sensational. He worked seven frames to get the win. Bouknight struck out 13 batters and gave up just two hits.
Charles Herring, Jr., added three strikeouts in the eighth while
Jacob Bodkin closed out the game with a solid ninth inning.
