AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA women's basketball team lost a 61-48 contest at Clayton State Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 6-20 on the season, including 3-13 in PBC play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Rhiannon Saller's 13-point, 12-rebound effort.
Destiny Harman added 11 points and three steals while
Serena Baker notched nine points, eight boards and three steals.
Paris Webster totaled seven points and five assists.
Riley Simmons and
Sami Bardonaro had three-points apiece while
Kendall Parker added two. Simmons snagged six rebounds.
Down 8-0 in the early going, Harman found Baker for a jumper at the 7:16 mark. Harman drained a shot from downtown off a pass from Webster, making it 8-5. Trailing 10-6, Webster hit a jumper. With 1:28 to go in the quarter, she hit a pair of free throws to knot the score. Bardonaro connected with Harman, who promptly buried a shot from distance for a 13-10 lead entering the second stanza.
The Lakers went on an 11-2 spurt to open the period before Saller canned a pair of shots to make it 21-19. However, Clayton State went on a 9-2 spurt to close out the half for a 30-21 advantage at the break.
Simmons hit a pull-up jumper and Saller made a free throw, slicing the deficit to five, 30-25. A 9-2 run by the Lakers pushed the margin to 39-27 before Parker hit two free throws near the end of the third quarter.
Miller's team trailed 46-31 in the fourth frame before Webster dished out an assist to Harman, who promptly canned a three-ball. Saller made a jumper, pulling the visitors within 10, 46-36. Neither team could gain much on the opposition with the lead hovering near the 10-point mark. Saller drilled a jumper to once again make it a 10-point game, but the Lakers managed to keep the Pacers at bay.
USCA cut the deficit to eight, 56-48, when Baker found Bardonaro for a three-point basket with 1:55 to play, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
For the game, USCA hit 16-of-49 (32.7 percent) from the field, including five-of-19 (26.3 percent) from downtown. The squad also canned 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the charity stripe. Miller's team held a 45-35 edge on the glass. The squad dished out 10 assists and had 12 second chance points.
