Pacers Race Past Sand Sharks

AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA women's basketball team registered a 70-57 victory over USC Beaufort Monday evening.

The Pacers are now 6-18 on the season, including 3-11 in PBC play.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was led by Serena Baker's game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Rhiannon Saller added 12 points, eight boards and three assists while Riley Simmons notched 11 points and eight rebounds. Kendall Parker totaled nine points while Sami Bardonaro and Paris Webster had eight and seven, respectively. Webster dished out five assists in the win.

Down 10-2, Saller buried a jumper. With 5:31 on the clock, Saller hit a pair of free throws. With the score at 16-8, Wester canned a lay-up. With under two minutes to play in the quarter, Baker hit a jumper. She netted a pair of free throws with 68 ticks to play, pulling the team within four at 18-14. Baker made a pair of late free throws, making it a two-point game entering the second quarter.

USCA tied it just 18 seconds into the frame when Saller made a shot in the lane. Her lay-up at the 8:47 mark propelled the home team to the lead. With 5:53 to play, Bardonaro drained a three-point bucket, extending the advantage to 26-18. A Parker three-point shot on the break pushed the margin to 12, 31-19. Miller's team led by as many as 16 before holding a 35-21 advantage at the break. During the 10-minute stretch, the defense stifled the Sand Sharks. Miller's team outscored the visitors 19-3.

Leading 41-32, Destiny Harman connected on a shot from distance. The visitors pulled within eight before Baker nailed a shot in the lane at the 4:26 mark. With a 46-39 lead, Baker nailed jumper with 2:54 to play. Up 50-41, Simmons found the bottom of the net with a three-ball. A runner in the lane by Gracie Huffard pushed the cushion to 14, 55-41. USCA would lead 55-43 entering the fourth stanza.

The Sand Sharks pulled within eight at the 8:11 mark, but Saller's lay-up extended the margin back to double digits. Up by nine, Parker buried a jumper in the lane. After a shot by Baker, Bardonaro converted another shot from the three-point line, giving the team a 64-48 edge. The visitors could get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

For the game, USCA hit 26-of-57 (45.6 percent) from the floor, including eight-of-17 (47.1 percent) from downtown. The squad canned 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the charity stripe. Miller's team held a 39-38 edge on the glass. The team scored 32 points in the paint and converted 13 turnovers into 13 points.
