COCHRAN, Ga. – The USCA men's basketball team posted a 68-65 road win at Middle Georgia State Saturday afternoon in a PBC contest.
The Pacers are now 6-2 overall, including 2-0 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Caleb Byrd's 23-point, seven-rebound effort.
Montraivis White added 14 points, three steals and three assists while
William Vasser Jr., tallied 11 points and five boards.
Jonah Lawrence added six points, four boards and three assists.
Deandre Smart tallied five points and four rebounds while
McCaskill Rivers totaled four points and four rebounds.
Brock Cherry had three points while
Jackson Roberts contributed two points and six rebounds.
Down 5-1, White buried a three-ball. Trailing 7-4, Lawrence took a pass from Smart and converted a lay-up. Smart got on the board with an inside bucket, giving the team its first lead at 8-7. Down 13-11, Rivers and Vasser Jr., hit shots for a two-point margin at the 9:16 mark. Tied at 15-15, Byrd netted his first two points of the game. Vasser Jr., nailed a three-point bucket before Byrd took White's pass and drilled a shot from downtown for a 23-15 margin. Vanderslice's team maintained a 27-22 lead at the break.
USCA pushed the margin to 10 after a three-point play by Lawrence, extending the advantage to 34-24. White nailed a three-point shot and Byrd soared in for a lay-up, making it 39-26. Byrd's three-point play pushed the score to 54-42 with 10:15 to go.
Leading 54-50, Byrd answered the call with another old-fashioned three-point play at the 7:33 mark. After the Knights made it 57-55, Lawrence found White for a three-point bucket with 6:01 remaining. Leading 60-59, Byrd connected on another inside bucket. With the score at 62-60, Byrd canned two free throws at the 1:25 mark. Up 64-61, Rivers drained two charity tosses with 12 ticks to go. Leading 66-63, White connected on two free throws, putting the game away, with four seconds to play. The Knights hit a shot at the buzzer for the final tally.
For the game, USCA hit 21-of-60 from the floor, including nine-of-29 from downtown. The squad buried 17-of-24 at the free throw line. Vanderslice's team outrebounded the Knights 42-30, including a 14-7 edge on the offensive glass. The squad dished out 10 assists and scored 13 points off 13 turnovers.
