Caleb Byrd Nets 21 At Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The USCA men's basketball team lost a 67-63 contest at Flagler Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 6-3 on the season, including 2-1 in PBC play.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team was guided by Caleb Byrd's 21-point, four-rebound, four-steal effort. Jonah Lawrence totaled 13 points and six rebounds while Josiah Harding added nine points and five rebounds. Montraivis White netted eight points while Chedlet Delva and Deandre Smart had four points apiece. McCaskill Rivers and Jackson Roberts added two points apiece.

Cam Perkins and William Vasser Jr., had two assists apiece.

Down 8-3, White found Lawrence for a lay-up. At the 14:09 mark, Vasser Jr., found White for a three-ball, knotting the contest at 8-8. Trailing 22-10, Harding nailed a jumper. White connected on a pair of free throws, slashing the deficit to eight, 22-14. With the score at 29-17, Lawrence drained four free throws before Smart canned a jumper, pulling the team within six, 29-23.

Roberts and Rivers each hit inside shots, pulling the team within five at 32-27. Down 38-27, Byrd netted four points in the final 10 seconds, bringing Vanderslice's team within seven, 38-31, at intermission.  

Trailing 44-33 with just under 15 minutes to go, Vasser Jr., found Byrd for a shot from distance. Lawrence followed it up with a pair of free throws, pulling the squad within five, 44-39. Another Byrd three-ball made it 46-42 with 13:50 to play. With the score at 50-42, Delva threw down a dunk off a pass from Perkins. Harding's lay-up made it a four-point game.

Vanderslice's team trailed 63-51 before Byrd drilled another shot from distance off a pass from Harding. Delva tipped in a miss before Byrd drained two free throws. Lawrence's jumper put the score at 63-60 with 1:39 to go. Byrd netted a three-ball after a turnover, tying the game with 72 ticks on the clock.

Flagler converted a lay-up and USCA missed a jumper that would have tied the game. Vanderslice's squad was forced to foul and the Saints hit two free throws for the final tally.

For the game, USCA hit 21-of-55 from the floor, including eight-of-20 from downtown. The team was nearly automatic at the charity stripe, hitting 13-of-14. The team grabbed 29 boards, including six on the offensive glass. The Pacers dished out eight assists and scored 17 points off 13 turnovers.
