AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA men's basketball team shattered multiple school records in the 132-50 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 2-1 on the season.
The team established a school record for assists (35), rebounds (70), field goals made (52) and largest margin of victory (82). The 132 points marked the second most in school history.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
McCaskill Rivers' game-high 21 points. He added five boards and three assists.
Caleb Byrd and
William Vasser Jr., added 16 points and five boards apiece.
Brock Cherry totaled 14 points and eight boards while
TJ Jackson connected on four shots for 13 points.
Josiah Harding and
Jonah Lawrence netted 12 points apiece.
Jackson Roberts narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. He also added two blocks.
Deandre Smart totaled six points and three boards while
Montraivis White accounted for five points, seven boards and a game-high 12 assists.
Chedlet Delva added four points and five boards.
Johnniyus Sharpe chipped in two points and three boards while
Chase Allen added four boards.
Overall, eight student-athletes reached double digits for the victors.
USCA jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back. Vanderslice's team posted a 73-point first half and led by 49 at the break. In the opening stanza, USCA canned 31 shots – 20 of which were assisted. The squad erupted for 42 points in the paint in the first 20 minutes of action and netted 28 points on the break. Additionally, the team garnered 41 points off the bench in the first half.
Vanderslice's squad embarked on a 21-0 spurt to start the second period, which took only 4:12. Cherry started the run with back-to-back three-point buckets while Byrd also hit a three-ball. Roberts and Byrd followed that up with dunks before White canned another shot from deep. Lawrence hit a lay-up and Cherry ended the spurt with another three-point bucket. The Pacers crossed the 100-point plateau on a jumper by Rivers at the 11:22 mark.
For the game, USCA drained 52-of-81 (64.2 percent) from the floor, including 19-of-41 (46.3 percent) from downtown. The squad hit nine-of-12 (75.0 percent) from the charity stripe. The team grabbed 70 rebounds, dished out 35 assists, had eight steals and six blocks.
