NEWBERRY, S.C. – The USCA men's basketball team posted a 94-69 win at Newberry Saturday evening.
The Pacers are now 3-1 on the season.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Caleb Byrd's 21 points.
Jonah Lawrence totaled 18 points while
Deandre Smart accounted for 17 points and eight rebounds.
William Vasser Jr., chipped in nine points while
Josiah Harding had eight.
Montraivis White accounted for six points, seven rebounds and four steals while
Brock Cherry added six points.
McCaskill Rivers contributed four points while
TJ Jackson and
Jackson Roberts had three and two, respectively.
Byrd and White had four steals apiece. White dished out a team-best three assists while Byrd and Cherry had two.
Leading 6-5, White found Lawrence for a thunderous dunk. Smart added a lay-up before Lawrence canned two charity tosses for a 12-5 edge. Up 14-9, Smart netted the next three points. Vasser Jr., drilled a three-ball off a pass from Harding before Smart completed the run with an inside shot for a 22-9 margin.
Holding a 25-20 lead, Rivers and Smart connected on shots. Byrd found Cherry for an 11-point cushion, 31-20. Vanderslice's team led 37-30 before Lawrence hit two free throws and Byrd connected on another shot from downtown. USCA took a 12-point margin, 47-35, into halftime.
After Newberry pulled within six at the 18:44 mark, Byrd answered the bell with four consecutive points. Smart's bucket extended the lead to 12, 53-41, at the 15:39 mark. Jackson and Lawrence buried back-to-back three-point shots, giving USCA a 61-45 margin with 12:58 to play. Moments later, a 9-0 spurt by the Pacers put the game out of reach. Rivers' lay-up made it 70-47 with just 9:03 remaining.
Holding a 76-59 edge, Byrd started another spurt with three points. Cherry hit two free throws before finding Lawrence for a twisting lay-up and an 83-59 score.
For the game, USCA hit 32-of-59 (54.2 percent) from the floor, including 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the three-point stripe. The squad buried 19-of-26 (73.1 percent) from the charity stripe. The Pacers grabbed 36 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive glass. USCA led for all but 10 seconds of the game. The squad dished out 11 assists, posted 15 steals and scored 27 points off turnovers.
