USCA Drops Road Contest At Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – The USCA men's basketball team lost a 90-52 contest at Catawba Sunday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 1-1 on the season.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team was led by Brock Cherry's 10 points. Caleb Byrd accounted for nine points and five rebounds while Jonah Lawrence scored eight points. Johnniyus Sharpe added five markers. William Vasser Jr., and Jackson Roberts scored four points each while Cam Perkins hit a three-point shot.

Chedlet Delva grabbed five boards while Vasser Jr., pulled down four rebounds. Montraivis White dished out two assists while Vasser Jr., led the way with three steals. Cherry had a pair of thefts in the game.

Down 11-4 in the early going, Byrd found William Vasser Jr., for a three-ball. After an 8-0 run by the Catawba Indians, Byrd netted a three-point bucket. Brock Cherry found Jackson Roberts for a lay-up, trimming the deficit to seven, 19-12. Trailing 28-14, Lawrence netted four consecutive points. However, the home team embarked on a 10-0 spurt for a 38-18 edge with 5:11 to play.

With the score 44-26, Cherry hit a shot from distance. Byrd canned a pull-up jumper prior to Cherry scoring on a lay-up, but the Catawba Indians maintained a 47-33 lead at the break.

Delva's jumper made it 54-37 at the 17:15 mark. Catawba held USCA without a field goal until Byrd's three-ball off a pass from Lawrence with just under 10 minutes to play. Byrd's bucket put the score at 69-45. However, the team could get no closer the rest of the way.

For the game, USCA hit 17-of-67 from the floor. The team drained seven three-point shots and connected on 11 free throws. The team grabbed 32 boards, including 15 on the offensive glass. The team dished out nine assists and netted nine points on the break. The Pacers tallied nine steals and converted 17 turnovers into 12 points. USCA scored 20 points in the paint.
