ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The USCA men's basketball team posted an 89-84 road win at Flagler Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 9-4 overall, including 2-1 in PBC play.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Davion Cunningham's 24-point, five-rebound performance.
Jalen McCoy added 23 points and seven boards.
Simeon German tallied nine points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals while
Mason Grant added seven points.
Rafael Rubel totaled six points while
Dwight Canady, Jr.,
Cam Perkins,
Rhyjon Blackwell and
Kaleb Siler netted five points apiece.
USCA started things out well as Cunningham and Canady, Jr., each hit shots from deep in the first 1:19 for a 6-0 edge. Canady, Jr., found Rubel for a three-ball a minute later for a 9-2 lead. Down 12-11, Cunningham and Siler each hit lay-ups. Leading 15-14, McCoy converted a three-point play at the 12:41 mark. A pair of free throws by German pushed the margin to 20-14 with 12:06 to go.
Up 30-26, Blackwell found Cunningham for a lay-up. He absorbed the contact and promptly hit a free throw for a seven-point margin. When Perkins found Cunningham for a three-ball at the 4:53 mark, Vanderslice's team held a 40-32 lead, but the Saints netted the next five points. Up 42-37 after McCoy's lay-up, Flagler made a pair of inside shots to make it a one-point game. German tipped in a shot for a 44-41 lead, but the home team netted the next six points before Blackwell's jumper at the buzzer pulled USCA within one at 47-46.
Trailing 53-48 with just less than 18 minutes to play, McCoy found Rubel for a three-ball. McCoy and Cunningham posted lay-ups for a 55-53 margin. The back-and-forth affair saw Flagler take a 65-62 lead before Cunningham knotted the contest.
Down 69-67, McCoy hit two charity tosses at the 8:19 mark. Grant's lay-up and Cunningham's three-point play provided the visitors with a 74-69 advantage. A three-point basket by the Saints pulled the home team within one, 83-82, at the 1:29 mark. However, Cunningham found McCoy for a lay-up. The Saints countered with a dunk, once again making it a one-point contest with 41 seconds to go.
After a time-out, McCoy hit a jumper with 23 ticks on the clock. Flagler missed a three-point attempt and German snared the rebound with 17 seconds remaining. He hit both free throws, securing the win.
For the game, USCA hit 33-of-63 from the floor (52.4 percent), including eight-of-16 from downtown (50.0 percent). The Pacers buried 15-of-18 from the charity stripe (83.3 percent). Vanderslice's squad pulled down 34 boards, including nine on the offensive glass. USCA dished out 11 assists, had seven blocks and totaled six steals.
