AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA men's basketball team placed four student-athletes in double figures in the 84-49 win over Augusta Sunday.
The Pacers are now 10-4 on the season, including 3-1 in PBC play.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Jalen McCoy's game-high 18 points and six rebounds.
Davion Cunningham netted 15 points while
Rhyjon Blackwell totaled 11 points.
Mason Grant came off the bench to hit for 10 points while
Kaleb Siler contributed nine markers. Siler also had a pair of blocks and steals.
Caleb Byrd added six points while
Simeon German,
Dwight Canady, Jr., and
Cam Perkins had four points apiece.
Chedlet Delva banked in a three-point bucket for his lone shot attempt.
Baskets by Cunningham and Blackwell made it 5-0 just 1:23 into the contest. Leading 9-4, Blackwell was fouled on a three-point attempt. He calmly drained all three charity tosses before finding Cunningham for a dunk, making it 14-4 with 15:02 to play.
AU pulled within six, but Siler quieted the visiting crowd with a lay-up off a pass from Grant. McCoy's jumper pushed the margin back to 10, 18-8.
The Jaguars trimmed the lead to six, but Cunningham answered with a basket. With 6:22 to play, McCoy tipped in his own miss for a double-digit advantage. Up 28-19, Grant hit a jumper before Cunningham stole a pass and laid it up and in. A jumper by Grant extended the margin to 15, 34-19.
Vanderslice's team continued applying pressure. Leading 34-21, Canady, Jr., hit two free throws. With the score at 38-23, Canady, Jr., followed up a miss. He hustled into the lane, snagged the ball and lifted a high arcing shot over the defense. The ball found the bottom of the net just before halftime for a 40-23 lead at the break.
USCA pushed the advantage to 27 on a lay-up by Byrd at the 16:36 mark. Leading by 25, Siler took a pass from Byrd and slammed home a dunk to make it 55-28. Moments later, USCA went up by 29. AU trimmed the deficit to 21 with 6:07 to play, but Cunningham answered with a step-back three-ball.
Up by 26, Perkins hit a shot in the lane. Grant followed it up with four consecutive charity tosses. With 1:21 left, Perkins hit Grant for a dunk, pushing the margin to 81-47. After a lay-up by the visitors, Perkins found Delva for a straight-away three-point shot for the final tally.
For the game, USCA hit 31-of-56 (55.4 percent) from the floor, including four-of-eight (50.0 percent) from downtown. The team also canned 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) from the charity stripe. The Pacers held a 38-23 edge on the glass, including a 14-8 margin on the offensive boards. Vanderslice's team had nine steals and eight assists.
The Pacers recorded 36 points off the bench and outscored the visitors 46-24 in the lane. USCA accounted for 23 points off turnovers and had 14 second chance points.
