AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA women's basketball team lost a 60-46 contest to Georgia College & State University Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 3-9 overall, including 0-2 in PBC play.
Trailing 9-2,
Riley Simmons canned a jumper and hit a free throw for an old-fashioned three-point play. Moments later,
Serena Baker canned a shot to pull within two at 9-7. Down 14-7,
Paris Webster found Baker for another shot in the lane. Saller's basket made it 14-11, but the Bobcats held an 18-13 edge going into the second frame.
USCA embarked on a 5-0 spurt to start the second stanza. Parker connected on a field goal off a pass from
Rhiannon Saller before
Kendall Parker drained a three-ball off an assist from
Paris Webster. Down by seven twice with under two minutes to play, Webster hit a field goal and then two free throws. However, a last-second shot by the Bobcats made it 29-22 at the break.
The Pacers trailed 30-24 before Simmons and Saller hit back-to-back shots. Behind 31-28, Saller canned a jumper in the paint at the 6:15 mark. A field goal by Webster gave the home team a 32-31 edge with 5:34 to play. GCSU went on a 6-0 run before Webster hit a jump shot at the 2:54 mark. The visitors led by five before
Sami Bardonaro hit two free throws and Baker converted a lay-up. However, GCSU went on a 6-0 run behind two three-point shots for a 45-38 advantage going into the final quarter.
USCA found itself down by 13 with 6:55 to play. The team sliced the deficit to single digits. Down 55-43, Webster hit a free throw. Saller and
Destiny Harman each hit charity tosses to make it 55-46 with 4:01 to go, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by Saller's 11 points and five blocks. Parker and Webster tallied nine points apiece while Simmons scored eight. Baker posted six points. Bardonaro led the way with seven rebounds while Simmons snagged six. Harman and Webster had four rebounds each. Webster dished out a game-best five assists.
For the game, USCA hit 18-of-58 from the floor (31.0 percent). The team pulled down 44 rebounds, including 14 on the offensive glass. Miller's squad dished out 10 assists in the contest. Additionally, the home team held a 20-18 edge in the paint.
