DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The USCA men's basketball team posted a 64-52 victory at North Georgia Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 13-5 overall, including 6-2 in PBC play. The Nighthawks drop to 13-7 overall, including 5-3 against conference foes.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by a balanced scoring attack.
Rhyjon Blackwell drained four-of-nine from downtown and had a team-best 14 points.
Davion Cunningham and
Jalen McCoy posted 12 points apiece. Cunningham filled out the box score with eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks while McCoy had five boards.
Caleb Byrd added seven points while
Dwight Canady, Jr.,
Simeon German and
Rafael Rubel had five points apiece.
Mason Grant accounted for four points in the win. German pulled down nine boards while Rubel had three steals. Blackwell, Byrd and Rubel had four assists each.
Cunningham, McCoy and German connected on buckets in the early going for a 6-2 edge. Up 6-4, Blackwell nailed a three-ball and Grant made a lay-up, pushing the advantage to 11-4. Down 14-11, Canady, Jr., netted five consecutive points before McCoy's hook shot off a pass from Rubel gave the Pacers an 18-14 lead.
Up 18-17, McCoy took a pass from Byrd and promptly drilled a floater. Blackwell connected on a shot from downtown before finding German for a lay-up at the 6:18 mark. Blackwell hit two shots from distance before Cunningham buried a step-back jumper, extending the margin to 14, 33-19. A 5-0 run at the end of the period gave Vanderslice's squad a 40-25 lead at the break.
Rubel found Blackwell and McCoy for baskets in the early moments of the second period to go up 44-29. Leading 46-36, Byrd dished out assists to McCoy and Cunningham, guiding the team to a 14-point advantage with 10:19 to play.
With the score at 50-39, Rubel started a 7-0 spurt with a three-ball. Byrd soared in for a lay-up and Grant's hook shot gave USCA an 18-point margin at the 7:11 mark. Byrd's jumper with 4:03 to play made it a 19-point contest and the Pacers secured the 12-point victory.
For the game, Vanderslice's team hit 27-of-59 (45.8 percent) from the field, including seven-of-22 (31.8 percent) from downtown. The squad hit three-of-four (75.0 percent) from the charity stripe. USCA held a 34-32 edge on the glass. The Pacers dished out 22 assists and forced 15 turnovers. The team converted the 15 miscues into 16 points.
