Pacers Play To 1-1 Draw With Belmont Abbey

SALISBURY, N.C. – The USCA men's soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw with Belmont Abbey Thursday evening in the season opener.

Both teams are now 0-0-1 on the year.

A mere 77 seconds into the match, Emilio Roman belted a shot toward the goal, but it was turned away by the keeper. After Sergio Aspas missed in the ninth minute of play, Belmont Abbey took the lead at the 9:39 mark.

Aspas tried to knot the score in the 15th minute, but the shot was saved. He also registered a low shot at the 16:05 mark but the keeper was up for the challenge. Finlay Dyer's attempt to the top left of the goal was saved with 22:14 on the clock.

At 31:56, Jose Rabadan laced a shot to the top left of the goal and he found the back of the net, knotting the score at 1-1.

BAC recorded the first three shots in the second period before Aspas notched an attempt that was blocked at the 59:11 mark. Rabadan accounted for back-to-back shots, including one on goal. Aspas and Roman narrowly missed before a Pacer defender blocked an attempt. Roman's last-second shot was saved, resulting in the 1-1 draw.  

Head coach Nick Sakiewicz's team was paced by Rabadan's goal. Aspas led the team with six shots, including two on goal. Rabadan tallied five shots, including three on target. Roman had three attempts – two of which were on goal.

For the match, USCA tallied 16 shots compared to eight by the designated visitors, including an 8-4 edge on goal. BAC totaled five corners while the Pacers had four corner kicks.

In goal, Felipe Mattos played all 90 minutes between the pipes, stopping three shots.
