Pacers Split Two On Friday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The USCA volleyball team spilt a pair of matches on Friday, taking down Mississippi College 3-1 before falling to UAH 3-0.

The Pacers are now 6-2 on the year.

Against Mississippi College, head coach Glenn Cox's team lost the first set 25-21 after trailing 18-10. 

USCA jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the second frame on an ace from Sidney Hogan. The team extended the advantage to 15-7 on an attack error. Up 15-9, Emily Lammers found the court for a point. Gyongyver Araczki added a block and two plays later, Lammers served up an ace for a 19-9 lead. With the score at 20-11, Anna Sommer hammered home back-to-back kills off passes from Hogan. Moments later, an attack error provided the Pacers with a 25-12 victory. 

Tied at 11-11 in the third frame, a service error gave Cox's team the ball. Lammers and Sommer combined for a block before Lammers recorded a kill. Chloe Duzenack and Sommer combined for a block, giving the team a 15-11 edge. Moments later, Araczki and Lammers tallied a block for a five-point advantage. MC made it a two-point contest at 20-18, but Alli Bishop took a pass from Tabor Scanlon for the point. Sommer added a kill, but the designated home team got within three. Down the stretch, Sommer and Lammers each had kills en route to the 25-21 win.

Tied at 15-15 in the fourth set, Sommer and Duzenack snagged back-to-back points before Lammers and Sommer combined for a block. Leading 18-17, Hogan recorded a kill. Two plays later, Lammers notched a point before a miscue by MC made it 21-18. Up 21-19, Lammers found the court once again for a point. Kaitlyn Rodriguez's kill gave USCA a 23-21 edge. Two plays later, Bishop notched a kill. With the score 24-23, Hogan connected with Sommer for the match-clinching point. 

Cox's team was paced by Sommer's 14-kill, five-block effort. Lammers hammered home 13 kills, had three blocks and served up three aces. Duzenack hit .800, slamming home eight kills in 10 attempts. She also was in on four blocks. Bishop tallied seven kills while Rodriguez accounted for four.

Hogan and Scanlon each dished out 20 assists in the victory. Hogan also had three aces in the win.

Sadie McKay led the defense with 15 digs. Rodriguez had 13 while Scanlon's 12 gave her a double-double.

Against Alabama-Huntsville, Araczki led the way with nine kills. Duzenack accounted for seven while Sommer tallied five. McKay provided some offensive firepower from her libero spot by serving up a match-best three aces.

Defensively, Sommer was outstanding. She provided five block assists while Bishop, Duzenack and Rodriguez were each in on two blocks. Lammers and Rodriguez had nine digs apiece.

Trailing by six at 22-16 in the first frame, Cox's team pulled within four after an error by the home squad and an ace from Lammers. However, that was as close as the team could get.

The team was within four at 18-14 in the second stanza, but a 7-1 spurt by UAH concluded the frame.

USCA's best set of the match was in the third. Down 13-11, Araczki slammed home a kill. Duzenack followed it up, knotting the score. Trailing 18-15, Ana Cate Loftus provided a spark with a point. McKay served up an ace and a kill from Araczki tied it at 18-18.

A 3-0 spurt by UAH was matched by the Pacers. With the score at 21-18, Araczki had a kill. An error by the Chargers and a kill from Duzenack made it 21-21. Moments later, Duzenack made it 23-22 but UAH netted the final two points for the win.
