AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team recorded a hard-fought 5-3 victory over USC Beaufort on Sunday to secure a spot in the upcoming PBC Tournament.
The Pacers are now 14-36 on the season, including 10-17 in PBC play.
With one down in the bottom of the first,
Josh Sharp drew a full-count walk and promptly scampered to second on a wild pitch. With two down,
Jack Hobson was hit by a pitch.
Kaden Usry's double to right field allowed both runners to race home for a quick 2-0 advantage.
The Sand Sharks knotted the contest in the top of the third inning.
With two on in the bottom of the fourth,
Cade Bouknight laid down a sacrifice bunt. The well-placed bunt pushed across
Luke Parker, who singled and went to third on a
Brandon Osypczuk base knock to left field.
Still up 3-2 in the sixth frame, Parker was the catalyst and got things going with a lead-off single to right field. An infield hit by Osypczuk put two on. Bouknight's sacrifice bunt pushed the runners up 90 feet.
Brock Myers lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Parker to score.
Josh Sharp followed up his big Saturday with an infield hit, plating Osypczuk for a 5-2 margin.
Leading 5-3, USC Aiken faced a bases loaded situation with one away. However, a strikeout and a line drive out secured the two-run edge for the home team entering the bottom of the eighth.
For the game,
Kaden Usry led the victors with three hits, including a double, to go along with two RBI. Osypczuk also notched three hits and a run. Parker tallied two hits and two RBI while Sharp accounted for a hit, one RBI and one run scored. Myers and Bouknight had one RBI apiece and Hobson crossed home.
On the mound,
AJ Deibel go the start and worked 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Cole Evilsizor accounted for three strikeouts in 1.2 frames.
Louie Smith worked two-thirds of a frame with a strikeout.
Jacob Butler registered three strikeouts in two innings of work. Bouknight entered from second base and tossed 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Jaylen Merchant replaced Bouknight on the mound with a runner on base in the top of the ninth as Bouknight returned to second base.
Evilsizor picked up the victory while Merchant registered a pair of strikeouts, including the final two outs of the contest, while earning the save.
The Pacers return to action when they face No. 1 Lander in the upcoming PBC Tournament. A complete schedule will be announced Monday by the league office.
