GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a hard-fought 10-inning 3-2 contest to top-seeded and No. 19 Lander Friday evening in the PBC Tournament.
The Pacers are now 14-37 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 38-13.
The top-seeded Bearcats broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, but head coach
Michael Holder's team quickly knotted the score in the fifth frame. With two outs,
Cade Bouknight was hit by a pitch.
Brock Myers ripped an offering into the gap in right center field, allowing Bouknight to hustle to third. All-conference honoree belted a pitch up the middle, knocking in Bouknight to tie the score at 1-1.
Josh Sharp got things going in the eighth inning with a lead-off single to left center field. A groundout pushed Sharp to second base and he hustled to third on a wild pitch.
Kaden Usry's base knock to right center field allowed Sharp to trot home for a 2-1 edge.
Lander scored in the bottom of the eighth, once again tying the contest. After neither team could push across a run in the ninth, extra innings were forced to decide the victor.
Sharp singled through the left side of the defense with one down and got into scoring position after swiping second base in the 10
th. However, he was left stranded.
The Bearcats managed to secure the game-winning run in the 10
th inning for the one-run victory.
For the game, Sharp led the way with three hits, two walks, one RBI and one run scored. Myers tallied two hits while
Dalton Graves and Usry each had a hit. Usry drove in a run while Bouknight also scored in the loss.
On the mound,
Kevin Cox was outstanding, going 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts. He gave up two earned runs on five hits.
Louie Smith tossed one-third of an inning as did
AJ Deibel.
Cole Evilsizor worked 1.1 innings and had a strikeout while
Jared Huse saw time in the 10
th on the mound.
