ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader at Flagler Saturday afternoon. The squad won the first game 5-3 before falling 2-0 in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 25-17 on the season, including a 10-10 ledger in PBC play.
Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team jumped on top of the home squad in the first inning. With one down,
Skylar Morley rocketed the first pitch she saw into left center field.
Austyn Dixon belted a double down the right field line, putting two on base.
Mallory Shaver launched a shot over the center field fence for a 3-0 advantage.
Leading 3-1 in the top of the third,
Ella Stone blasted a 1-1 offering over the left field wall, giving the Pacers a three-run cushion.
Up 4-2 in the top of the fifth,
Jena Dewalt singled and stole second base. Dixon registered a base knock to left field, pushing Dewalt to third. Two batters later, Dixon took second base. A wild pitch allowed Dewalt to race home for a 5-2 margin.
USC Aiken led 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh. With two down, Morley secured the win with a diving catch on a line drive.
For the game, Dixon, Shaver and Stone had two hits apiece. Shaver led the team with three RBI. She posted a double and a home run while Stone launched a round-tripper. Dixon and
Lydia Johnson each had doubles. Five different Pacers crossed home plate – Dewalt, Dixon, Morley, Shaver and Stone.
In the circle,
Payton Baker tossed a complete game. She gave up three runs on six hits. Baker struck out a season-high 11 batters and walked just two in the win.
In game two, Poole's team managed three hits, but also kept the home team off the board for all but one inning.
Dixon, Johnson and Morley posted base knocks while Shaver drew a walk in the seven-inning affair.
Trailing 2-0 in the fifth,
Kate Newberry drew a pinch-hit walk. After
Taylor Butts entered the contest, she hustled to third on Dixon's single through the left side of the infield. However, a grounder ended the inning with the go-ahead run at the plate.
In the circle,
Lakyn Phillips recorded the complete game. She gave up two runs on three hits.
Lakyn Phillips struck out four and walked five in the loss.
