ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team hit a pair of home runs but it was not enough in the 14-6 loss at Flagler College Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 25-18 on the season, including 10-11 in PBC play.
Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Lydia Johnson roped a base hit to left field and moved to second on
Skylar Morley's base knock back to the pitcher. On the ensuing pitch,
Austyn Dixon hit a high fly ball that carried just over the right center field wall for a 3-0 advantage.
The Saints struck for six runs in the bottom of the first, but USC Aiken cut into the deficit in the top of the second.
Ella Stone rocketed a 3-2 pitch to left center field. With one down, she stole second before taking third on a wild pitch. Stone scored when Johnson reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, making it 6-4.
Down 8-4 in the top of the third inning,
Jena Dewalt blasted a solo homer over the center field wall with two down, cutting the margin to three at 8-5.
Flagler plated three runs in the bottom of the third for an 11-5 edge. Poole's team continued to battle, scoring a run in the top of the sixth. Dewalt started the frame with a walk and hustled to second on a
Chloe Phillips base hit through the left side of the defense. Two batters later,
Cameron Greene singled to left field, loading the bases. Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Dewalt to score, but that was as close as the team could get.
The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 14-6 final.
For the game, Morley led the way with a pair of hits while also scoring a run. Dixon drove in a game-high three runs while Dewalt scored a game-high twice.
