Pacers Fall To Hurricanes In Series Opener

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 6-5 decision Saturday evening in the first game of the three-game series at Georgia Southwestern.

The Pacers are now 7-13 overall, including 3-1 in PBC play. The Hurricanes stand at 15-5 on the year and 2-2 against PBC foes.

Head coach Michael Holder's team jumped on top with a two-run first inning. Josh Sharp recorded a one-out infield single and moved to second on a base knock from Capers Molinaroli. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up 90 feet. Dalton Graves reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Sharp and Molinaroli to score for a 2-0 advantage.

The Hurricanes trimmed the margin to one in the bottom of the first. The home team was threatening in the second frame, but Sharp snagged a line drive fly ball and promptly doubled off the runner at second base, ending the stanza.

GSW took a 4-2 lead with a three-run third. However, Holder's squad trimmed the deficit to just one in the fifth inning. With two down, Brock Myers beat out a ball back to the pitcher for a single. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Sharp belted a middle back up the middle, plating Myers.

USC Aiken knotted the game at 4-4 in the eighth. Dalton Graves got things started with a lead-off walk. After stealing second, he scored when Cade Bouknight reached on a two-out throwing error.

Down 5-4 in the top of the ninth, Myers walked and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Sharp. After scampering to third on a wild pitch, Molinaroli drove him in on a sacrifice fly. However, the Hurricanes managed to win the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

For the game, Sharp led the way with three hits, one RBI and a run scored. Molinaroli posted two hits, one RBI and scored a run. Myers and Bouknight each tallied hits. Myers scored twice while Graves crossed home once.

On the mound, Jacob Fletcher got the start and worked six innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits and tallied eight strikeouts. Matt Garcia tossed 2.2 frames and took the loss. He had five strikeouts and gave up two runs, but only one was earned on three hits.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
