AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 14-3 contest to Georgia College & State University in the series opener Thursday evening.
The Pacers are now 8-24 on the year, including a 4-9 ledger in league play. The Bobcats stand at 19-11 overall and 10-3 against conference foes.
Head coach
Michael Holder's team nearly got on the board first inning. With one down,
Josh Sharp blasted a triple to the gap in right center field. However, a groundout and fly ball ended the inning.
The Bobcats struck for five runs in the second inning for a 5-0 lead. Holder's team put a runner on as
Joseph Mozingo ripped a single to right field. He raced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from
Luke Parker, but back-to-back outs ended the stanza.
Jack Hobson reached on an error in the third, but was erased on a fielder's choice. With two down,
Capers Molinaroli walked to put two on base. However, a line drive to left field was snagged for the final out of the inning.
Luke Parker blasted a single to left field in the fourth. A two-out walk to
Doom Dennis put two runners on base, but the Bobcats were able to get out of the jam thanks in part to a fielder's choice.
Trailing 7-0 in the sixth, Parker and
Cade Bouknight each drew walks. After a pitching change, Dennis blasted a pitch through the third baseman's legs and into left field. He reached on the error while Parker raced home to make it 7-1. With the bases loaded,
Capers Molinaroli drew a walk, pushing across a run.
Down 9-2 in the seventh inning,
Joseph Mozingo blasted a 2-2 offering over the left center field fence for a solo homer.
For the game, Sharp led the way with three hits, including a triple. Mozingo registered two hits, including a solo round-tripper.
On the mound,
Jacob Fletcher got the start and worked 5.1 innings. He gave up seven runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits. Fletcher tallied eight strikeouts and walked just one.
Caden Purvis threw 2.2 frames and gave up two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
Jacob Bodkin,
Jacob Butler and
Kellen Blankenship combined to work the ninth frame.
