Pacers Split Doubleheader With Cougars

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team split a doubleheader with Columbus State on Saturday.

USC Aiken dropped the first game 4-1 before bouncing back for an exciting 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Pacers are now 8-21 on the year, including 4-7 in PBC action. The Cougars are now 18-12 on the year and 6-5 against conference competition.

In game one, CSU struck first with two runs in the top of the third, but head coach Michael Holder's team sliced the deficit to just one in the bottom of the frame. Doom Dennis led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bradley White II. Two batters later, Dalton Graves singled to right field, plating Dennis.

The Cougars extended the margin to three with a two-run fifth inning for a 4-1 advantage. With Jacob Fletcher performing well, CSU was unable to push across any more runs.

In the eighth, Cade Bouknight led off the inning with a base hit to center field. However, he was erased on a double play.

For the game, Bouknight, Graves, Joseph Mozingo and Sharp registered base hits. Graves drove in Dennis for the team's lone run.

On the mound, Jacob Fletcher got the start and tossed eight innings. He struck out four batters and gave up four runs on 11 hits with two walks. Cade Purvis came in for the ninth stanza. He got out of a slight jam, keeping the Cougars at bay in the final frame.

In game two, CSU jumped on the board with a run in the first inning, but Hunter Steger continued to look sharp. The Cougars added a run in the fifth and sixth innings for a 3-0 edge, but head coach Michael Holder's team erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Capers Molinaroli started the stanza with a double to right field. He raced to third on a fly ball before coming home when Joseph Mozingo roped a double down the left field line. Kaden Usry drew a walk and Bouknight was hit by a pitch. Brandon Osypczuk came in as a pinch hitter and was hit, pushing across a run.

Cannon Frost entered as a pinch runner. With the bases loaded, Usry scored when Brock Myers drew a walk. Josh Sharp also walked, allowing Bouknight to score. After a pitching change, Frost scored on a passed ball for a 5-3 advantage.

Still up 5-3 in the eighth, Jack Hobson belted a double to the wall in right field. After going to third on a wild pitch, Cannon Frost singled through the right side of the infield, knocking in Hobson for a three-run lead.

For the game, Myers and Usry had two hits apiece. Hobson, Molinaroli, Mozingo and Sharp all recorded doubles.

On the mound, Steger got the start and gave up three runs on seven hits. He struck out 10 batters. AJ Deibel entered the contest and worked the sixth inning with a strikeout to get the win. Jared Huse came in prior to the seventh frame. He worked the final three innings to pick up the save.
