USC Aiken Takes Two From USC Beaufort On Sunday

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept the doubleheader against USC Beaufort Sunday by scores of 4-1 and 9-0.

The Pacers are now 16-7 on the year and 2-3 in PBC play.

In game one, head coach Jaclin Poole's team broke the scoreless tie in the third inning. With two down, Jena Dewalt roped a double to right center field. Lydia Johnson doubled her home for the 1-0 advantage.

The Pacers made it 2-0 with a run in the fourth. Austyn Dixon led off the frame with a double to right field. Grace Ann Thompkins came in as a pinch runner and moved to third on a fielding error that allowed Mallory Shaver to reach base. Anna Turner came in for Shaver as a pinch runner. Turner was out while trying to steal, but Thompkins crossed home plate for the two-run lead.

After the Sand Sharks scored an unearned run in the sixth, Lydia Johnson crushed a pitch for a line drive home run over the center field fence, making it 3-1. With two down, Kate Newberry ripped a single down the left field line. She raced home on Chloe Phillips' double to right field.

The visitors had a runner on first base in the seventh but a Taylor Butts caught a line drive and doubled up the runner, ending the game.

For the game, Johnson and Newberry had two hits apiece. Johnson led the way with two RBI in the victory.  

In the circle, Payton Baker had six strikeouts in the complete game win. Baker gave up one unearned run on three hits en route to the victory.  

In game two, Skylar Morley beat out a ball to third base for a hit with one down in the bottom of the first. She moved to third on Austyn Dixon's single to center field. Morley and Dixon scored when Kate Newberry reached on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.

After a walk to Chloe Phillips, Shaver walked to load the bags. Two batters later, Cameron Greene came in as a pinch hitter and promptly doubled home Newberry and Phillips for a 4-0 advantage.

In the third, Johnson recorded a two-out single and moved to third when Morley ripped a pitch to right center field. With both runners in scoring position, Dixon blasted a single up the middle, making it 6-0.

USC Aiken put the game out of reach with a three-run fourth inning. With one down, Shaver drew a base on balls as did Ella Stone. Abigail Wyatt came in as a pinch runner for Shaver and a walk to Taylor Butts loaded the bags. Ashlyn White's hit to left field knocked in two before Johnson's single to left center field drove in White for a 9-0 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Lakyn Phillips lost her no-hit bid. However, she posted the shutout. Lakyn Phillips tallied four strikeouts while giving up just two hits without allowing a run.

For the game, Dixon, Johnson, Morley and Chloe Phillips had two hits apiece. Dixon, Greene and White had two RBI each. Shaver walked three times and Morley scored twice.
