ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a 79-58 decision at Flagler Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 4-17 overall, including 0-11 in PBC play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Jentri Worley's team-best 11 points.
Sami Bardonaro added 10 points and four rebounds.
Alivia Hikel and
Marta Rivera tallied nine points apiece. Rivera also snagged six boards.
Annalise Malone accounted for six points, eight rebounds and a block.
Destiny Harman scored four points, snagged five boards and dished out a team-best four assists.
Paris Webster and
Kelsie Woodard pulled down four rebounds each.
Trailing 7-3 in the first frame, Worley made a lay-up. With 4:57 to go in the stanza, Harman found
Jaya Nelson for an inside bucket, knotting the score. The Saints maintained a 21-9 lead before Worley found Malone. Hikel's jumper pulled USC Aiken within eight, 21-13, at the end of the first quarter.
Worley made it a six-point game 3:09 into the second period at 21-15. Down 31-18, Worley hit two free throws at the 3:26 mark. Just 19 seconds later, Bardonaro found Hikel for a lay-up, making it 31-22. Down 35-25, Malone made a pair of free throws with 55 seconds before halftime. Miller's team closed the half with a jumper by Rivera off a pass from Bardonaro. The basket made it 35-29 going into the third quarter.
Rivera opened the scoring in the third stanza with a lay-up just 12 seconds in. She finished off the old-fashioned three-point play by hitting the charity toss. Rivera propelled the Pacers to the lead at 36-35 at the 7:57 mark after converting a pair of lay-ups off passes from Harman.
The Saints answered with an 8-0 spurt before Harman stopped the run with a free throw at the 5:45 mark. Miller's team pulled within six on a three-ball from Bardonaro, but the home team managed to take a 57-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
USC Aiken made it a 10-point game on a free throw by
Rhiannon Saller at the 9:34 mark but Flagler managed to not let the visitors get any closer the rest of the way.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 22-of-65 (33.8 percent) from the floor. The squad buried 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) from the foul line. Miller's team pulled down 43 rebounds compared to 37 by the Saints. The Pacers corralled 13 offensive rebounds, which led to 10 second-chance points. USC Aiken tallied 26 points in the paint. The defense swatted a pair of shots in the contest.
