AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team picked up a sweep of Newberry Sunday afternoon by scores of 5-2 and 4-3.
Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team is now 2-2 on the year as are the Wolves.
In the first game,
Austyn Dixon took the first pitch she saw and rocketed the offering over the right center field fence for a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.
USC Aiken extended the margin in the fourth frame. With one down,
Mallory Shaver reached on a single and
Grace Ann Thompkins came in as a pinch runner.
Kate Newberry laid down a sensational bunt and was able to place it between three Wolves' student-athletes for a single.
Ella Stone walked with two down to load the bases. Two pitches later, rookie
Chloe Phillips uncorked a thunderous swing and rocketed the offering high over the left field wall for a grand slam.
Newberry scored a pair of unearned runs to make it 5-2. In the seventh inning, Newberry threatened but
Payton Baker finished the game with her eighth strikeout.
In the circle, Baker tossed the complete game for the second day in a row. She struck out eight batters and did not walk anyone. She gave up seven hits, but only one went for extra bases.
For the game, Dixon had led the way with two hits.
Chloe Phillips' lone hit marked her first career round-tripper.
In the second game, Newberry took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first frame and added an unearned run in the fourth stanza.
In the bottom of the fourth, Dixon singled up the middle to lead things off. She hustled to second when Shaver beat out a ball to third base for a single. Thompkins came in as a pinch hitter and
Tara McGee, who came in as a pinch hitter, delivered a base knock to right field to make it 2-1.
Chloe Phillips lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate
Anna Turner, who had entered the contest as a pinch hitter.
Stone took a 2-1 pitch to right field, scoring
Skylar Morley from second base to take the lead, 3-2.
Lydia Johnson's double to straight-away center field allowed Stone to score for a two-run advantage.
With one out in the sixth inning, Baker relieved
Lakyn Phillips. She managed to get out of a bases loaded jam while keeping the score at 4-2. Newberry scored a run in the seventh inning but Baker forced a line drive for the final out to pick up the save.
In the circle, Phillips got the win while throwing 5.1 frames and had four strikeouts. Baker tossed the final 1.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
For the game, Johnson and Shaver had two hits apiece. Johnson had a double and one RBI. Dixon, McGee,
Ashlyn White, Stone and Newberry all had hits. McGee, Stone and
Chloe Phillips all had one RBI apiece.
