AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 21 University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team placed three student-athletes in double figures in the 91-74 victory over Georgia College & State Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 16-4 overall, including 7-3 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Tyler Johnson's 31-point, six-rebound, five-steal performance. He canned nine-of-17 from the floor, including four-of-seven from downtown. Additionally, Johnson made nine-of-10 from the foul line.
Tehree Horn added 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting. He added five boards and three steals in 29 minutes of work.
Rhyjon Blackwell added 13 markers, five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Simeon German accounted for nine points and seven rebounds while
Demitrios Dixon added five points.
Chedlet Delva snagged seven boards.
Melvin Archie and
Jameel Rideout each added two points in the win.
Tied at 7-7, Johnson was fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly converted all three shots. At the 15:53 mark, Blackwell canned a jumper for a five-point edge. Up 14-12, Johnson hit another three-ball and German hit a free throw for a six-point edge.
Tied at 25-25, Johnson converted a three-point play. With 5:18 to play, Johnson took a pass from Dixon on the break and nailed a shot from downtown for a 31-25 advantage. The Bobcats cut the margin to one with 16 seconds to play before Horn fed Delva for a short jumper as the buzzer sounded to make it 41-38 at the break.
Tied at 50-50, German gave the home team the lead for good on a free throw. Blackwell added a jumper and Johnson hit two free throws with 12:07 to play for a five-point edge.
The Bobcats cut the margin to one with 10:19 to play but Horn answered with an old-fashioned three-point play. Horn's basket at the 7:20 mark extended the advantage to nine, 68-59. Leading by six, Johnson found Dixon for a three-ball and Horn's two free throws at the 4:48 mark pushed the margin to double figures, 75-64. USC Aiken's largest lead of the game was 19. The first 19-point advantage came on a dunk by Blackwell while Archie's basket with 30 seconds to go made it 91-72.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 30-of-66 from the floor (45.5 percent), including seven-of-23 from distance (30.4 percent). The squad buried 24-of-31 foul shots (77.4 percent). USC Aiken snagged 39 rebounds which led to 16 second-chance points. The team scored 30 points in the paint and converted 19 turnovers into 29 points.
