BEAUFORT, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a 75-73 overtime contest at USC Beaufort Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 4-13 on the season, including 0-7 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Annalise Malone's 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor. She also added six rebounds.
Jentri Worley tallied 14 points and six boards while
Hailey Unger notched 10 points and seven assists.
Marta Rivera tallied eight points and nine rebounds while
Sami Bardonaro accounted for five points and nine boards.
Paris Webster added four points while
Jaya Nelson and
Alivia Hikel added three points and two points, respectively.
Trailing 13-7 in the early going, Unger found Malone for an old-fashioned three-point play. Unger's bucket pulled the visitors within two, 13-12, at the 5:23 mark. Down 15-12, Worley nailed a pull-up and Rivera's lay-up put the Pacers in front, 16-15. Webster buried a jumper before Rivera connected on an inside shot. Nelson's free throw made it 21-15 with 1:09 to go in the quarter. USC Aiken led 23-17 after the first frame.
USCB took the lead at 27-25. Down by four, Malone converted a lay-up as did Unger, knotting the score at 29-29. The back-and-forth affair saw the home team take a 33-31 lead before Malone hit back-to-back baskets for a two-point edge. Unger's two charity tosses extended the margin to four, 37-33 but a late field goal by the Sand Sharks made it 37-35 at the break.
The home squad held a 48-40 lead but Bardonaro found Malone for a shot in the lane. Hikel netted her first two points of the evening before Worley made a pair of free throws with 33 seconds to go in the third quarter to make it 48-46 heading into the fourth stanza.
Down by six, 52-46, Webster hit two free throws. Worley and Rivera each scored field goals, knotting the contest at 52-52 with 7:02 to play. The tightly contested game saw USC Aiken snag a 57-56 advantage when Malone hit one-of-two free throws at the 2:13 mark. Tied at 58-58, the home squad took the lead with 27 seconds to play but Bardonaro found Malone for a lay-up with 19 seconds to go, knotting the contest at 60-60.
In the waning seconds, USC Aiken forced a jump ball. With under a second to play, Unger launched a shot behind midcourt that narrowly missed on finding the bottom of the net, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Worley hit two free throws 30 seconds in for a two-point margin. Malone gave the visitors a four-point cushion with a lay-up at the 3:43 mark. With 3:05 to play, Malone converted a three-point play for a 67-62 lead. USCB countered with an 8-0 run before Worley nailed two free throws to pull within one at 70-69. Trailing by three, Worley hit a runner in the lane with 29.7 ticks remaining. USC Aiken found itself down by two in the final seconds, but a three-point attempt was no good.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 27-of-74 from the floor (36.5 percent). The squad buried 18-of-25 from the charity stripe (72.0 percent). Miller's team dished out 15 assists and scored 10 points off 15 turnovers. The team also controlled the paint, outscoring the home team 44-34 in the lane.
