MORROW, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a 65-53 game at Clayton State Saturday afternoon in a PBC contest.
The Pacers are now 4-14 overall, including 0-8 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Jentri Worley's team-best 15 points. She added a team-high six boards as well as a game-best three assists.
Hailey Unger accounted for 13 points, including nine from downtown.
Marta Rivera added 10 points and six rebounds.
Jaya Nelson contributed seven points in the game.
Unger's pull-up jumper knotted the game at 5-5. Rivera buried two free throws and
Destiny Harman found Worley for a deep three-ball, giving the visitors a 10-5 edge. Unger's shot concluded the 10-0 run for the Pacers. The Lakers counted with an 11-2 run to close the quarter.
Nelson quickly gave USC Aiken the lead with a lay-up 14 seconds into the second quarter. Clayton State took a 29-20 lead at the 6:14 mark but Worley's jumper sparked the Pacers. Worley hit Rivera for a jumper. Nelson connected on two free throws at the 4:02 mark. Unger's pass led to a basket from Rivera, making it a one-point game. Down 31-28,
Alivia Hikel's inside bucket pulled Miller's team within one. Unger found the bottom of the net at the 1:30 mark, sending the Pacers to halftime with a 32-31 advantage.
The visitors took a 34-32 lead on a Rivera lay-up at the 8:48 mark. Down 39-34, Worley connected with Unger for a three-point bucket, making it 39-37. A 13-1 run to end the quarter made it 52-38 heading into the final stanza.
Nelson's drained two charity tosses to start the quarter. The home team led 61-45 with 4:27 left but
Rhiannon Saller and Worley each made inside shots, once again making it a 12-point game at 61-49. With 2:15 to go, Harman swung the ball to the wing and
Sami Bardonaro nailed a shot from behind the arc, slicing the deficit to nine, 62-53. However, that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 18-of-51 (35.3 percent), including six-of-17 (35.3 percent) from downtown. The squad connected on 11 free throws. Miller's team held a 41-39 edge on the glass. The Pacers distributed 11 assists on 18 field goals. USC Aiken also registered eight second-chance points.
