ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to knock off Flagler 3-2 Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 10-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was paced by
Cat Bodick's career-high 13 kills. She also hit .286 and had three total blocks, including two of the solo variety.
Lexi Rogers totaled a double-double with 11 kills and 19 digs while Gyöngyvér Araczki totaled 10 kills and five blocks.
Kaitlyn Rodriguez was superb as well, totaling nine kills and six digs. Her biggest kill might have been with the Pacers trailing 4-2 in the fifth set. The Saints thought the play was over but Rodriguez bumped it over while falling to the floor, baffling the home team, to get the kill.
Emily Lammers added six kills and 13 digs while
Alisha Pitt garnered five kills.
Mallory Barash had 37 assists and 13 digs while
Sophie Meredith dished out 13 assists in the victory.
Kari Mercer accounted for 24 digs, an ace and a kill.
After dropping the first two sets,
Alisha Pitt knotted the score at 1-1 in the third frame. She and
Cat Bodick were in on a block before Mercer tallied the ever-rare libero kill. Back-to-back errors made it 5-1. Up 9-6, Lammers slammed home a kill. A block from Araczki and a kill by Barash forced a time-out by the Saints. Up 16-15, an error by Flagler and an ace from Lammers extended the margin to three, 18-15. Tied at 19-19, consecutive miscues by the Saints gave USC Aiken a two-point edge. Cox's team held a 22-21 advantage before Pitt slammed home a kill. Rogers served up an ace and two plays later Rodriguez finished off the set with a kill.
Tied at 14-14 in the fourth set, Rodriguez and Rogers hammered home kills. The Saints pulled within one at 20-19 but Pitt took a pass from Barash and found the court. Leading 21-20, Araczki baffled the defense with back-to-back kills to force a break in action by the Saints. After the time-out, Rodriguez powered home a kill. Two plays later, Barash found Rodriguez for the set-winning point.
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth set, Rodriguez got the unusual kill. The Pacers gained momentum from that point and Lammers promptly served up back-to-back aces. The teams continued to trade points and Cox's team found itself trailing 9-8 before an error knotted the score.
Bodick and Rodriguez tallied back-to-back kills. Following a time-out by the Saints, the home team pulled within one. However, that was short lived as Pitt and Bodick registered kills, forcing another time-out. Up 13-11, Bodick went through the block for the point. Leading 14-12, Araczki finished off the match with the kill off a pass from Barash.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they play at Georgia College & State at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
