Two Second-Half Goals Send Pacers To Victory

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to knock off Georgia Southwestern 2-1 Saturday evening in front of a vibrant crowd.

The Pacers are now 1-4-1 on the season and 1-2 in league play. The Hurricanes fall to 0-2-1 against conference competition.

In the third minute of play, Wynston Johnson ripped a shot from 20 yards out that was saved by the keeper. Head coach Ike Ofoje's team continued applying pressure on the visitors. Diego Vega blasted an attempt toward the frame that was stopped in the eighth minute. Just over 60 seconds later, Fabian Avila's attempt was also saved.

On a break-away in the 13th minute, Kadin DeMesme ended up with the ball on the left wing, but his fast-paced attempt was high. The Pacers had a beautiful chance nearly 20 minutes into the match, but Jose Rabadan's shot from 15 yards out narrowly missed the upper part of the goal.

USC Aiken had a sensational chance in the 35th minute when the Hurricanes were whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Fabian Avila took the kick and tallied a shot on goal. The ball was flicked just over goal, earning the team a corner kick. The Pacers were unable to get another shot off the set piece as the teams were scoreless at the break.

GSW broke through with a goal at the 49:31 mark but Ofoje's squad continued to apply pressure to the visiting defense.

Jose Rabadan had a sensational move before garnering a shot from 20 yards out, but it was stopped in the 55th minute.

With 15:50 to play, USC Aiken knotted the score. In a scramble near the top of the box, Rabadan found Avila who played it to Diego Vega. He sent a shot to the far post past the diving keeper to make it 1-1. It marked his first goal as a Pacer.

With 13:23 to go, Rabadan flipped the ball to Lucas Pegorer who blasted the ball past the keeper for the 2-1 advantage. USC Aiken continued to play stellar in the defensive third of the pitch, keeping the Hurricanes at bay the rest of the way.

Tyler Hughes turned away four shots between the pipes in 90 minutes of action. Rabadan had a pair of assists in the match.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Lander for a 7:30 p.m., match. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
