USC Aiken Drops 1-0 Contest To Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.
 – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a 1-0 decision at Newberry Friday evening in the season opener.

Head coach Adam Kleman's team tried to get on the board early but Teagan Kersey's shot sailed right of the frame. The Wolves managed to score the lone goal of the match in the ninth minute of play.

Riley Stallings belted a shot on goal in the 21st minute while Kenna Souder and Sonya Villarreal had attempts near the midway point of the first half. Villarreal followed it up with another shot that missed high at the 29:42 mark. 

Reagan Leonard, Allison Mann and Stallings all had shots on goal in the first half but each time the squad was turned away.

Villarreal and Shiloh Pirro tallied shots on goal early in the second stanza but the keeper managed to save both tries. Pirro rocketed a shot to the lower right of the frame at the 55:00 mark but the keeper tallied a stop.

Karis Coleman had a shot on goal at he 82:11 mark, but she was unable to find the back of the net.  

For the match, Villarreal had three shots while Pirro and Stallings each had two shots on goal. 

Emma Gibson played the entire match between the pipes and had five saves.
