AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken had many thrilling moments throughout the action-packed 2022-2023 season. Whether it was on the diamond, the court, the course, the tee box or the pitch, PacerSports.com is going to relive some of those unforgettable highlights that defines the Pacers' spirit a sport at a time.
The USC Aiken golf team was consistent throughout the 2022-23 season. The team shot 290.3, which is the sixth-best stroke average in a season in the program's Division II history. The Pacers also earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The program has played in the NCAA Tournament in all but one season since moving to Division II.
USC Aiken was honored three times by the PBC for Golfer of the Week accolades (
Karl Frisk twice and
Leonardo Bono once) while
Erik Olin garnered PBC all-tournament team honors for his fourth-place finish.
Despite all the success this season – both individually and collectively, one highlight tops them all. The team notched a
tournament victory at the Wexford Intercollegiate. It marked the program's 91
st tournament victory since moving to Division II.
Head coach
Michael Carlisle's team opened the tournament with a six-over par, 582 and was in second place. Host Francis Marion led the field after the first day by one stroke at five-over par, 581.
After the first day of play,
Leonardo Bono and
Erik Olin were tied for fifth with identical scores of 144 while
Oscar Abrahamsson was two strokes back and in 15
th place.
Behind Bono's two-under par, 70, for the final 18 holes of competition, USC Aiken bested second-place Dayton by five strokes as well as Francis Marion and Richmond as each tied for third at 22-over par, 866.
Bono recorded a second-place finish for his effort while Olin tied for eighth at five-over par, 219.
Jonah Winter secured a top-25 finish (t-18
th).
The victory was USC Aiken's first since winning the 7
th Annual UNG Fall Invitational on Oct. 27, 2020. In addition to the win being the 91
st for the school, it was also the fourth time USC Aiken had won the Wexford Intercollegiate.
