Pacers Drop Top-25 Contest To Newberry

AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 25 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped in the 8-4 loss to Newberry Wednesday evening.

The Pacers are now 17-6 on the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, head coach Michael Holder's team knotted the score. Nick Tripp led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A fly ball pushed him to third and he raced home on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.

Two innings later, USC Aiken took a 2-1 lead. A walk to Luke Parker with one down got things going. Two batters later he was on third base after a single and wild pitch. Parker motored home on a sacrifice fly by Kaden Blankenship.

In the fifth, James Eckert reached on a throwing error and moved to second on a groundout. He scored on a Jackson Hannon single for a two-run advantage.

Newberry knotted the score in the sixth with two runs, making it 3-3. In the bottom of the stanza, Parker and Tripp posted back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt pushed them each up 90 feet. However, back-to-back outs ended the threat.

The Wolves plated two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth for an 8-3 lead but USC Aiken tried to mount a comeback. Eckert led off the inning with a double to right field before hustling to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Josh Sharp's base knock up the middle.

A walk to Hannon put two on. With one down, Sharp and Hannon went to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Parker walked to load the bags but a fielder's choice ended the game.

For the contest, Tripp led the team with three hits. Eckert and Sharp had two hits apiece. Eckert had a double while Blankenship, Hannon and Sharp each had one RBI. Eckert crossed home twice while Parker and Tripp each scored.

Derek Espinoza got the start and worked 5.1 innings while striking out two. Austin Sandifer struck out two in 1.1 innings while Dylan Wilhelm had two strikeouts as well. Justin Byrd and Jacob Bodkin each saw time on the mound in the loss.

The Pacers return to action Friday when they play at No. 4 Columbus State at 5 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
