COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 25 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team split a doubleheader at No. 4 Columbus State Saturday.
The Pacers fell 1-0 before winning 4-3.
The Pacers are now 18-7 overall and 10-1 in league play. The Cougars are 19-5 on the year and 11-3 in the PBC.
In game one,
Luke Parker got the team's first hit with an infield single in the second frame. With two down,
Nick Tripp singled through the left side to put two runners on, but head coach
Michael Holder's team was unable to push across a run in the frame.
In the fifth,
Kaden Blankenship drew a walk. With two down he swiped second, but a groundout ended the stanza. USC Aiken had an opportunity in the sixth when
James Eckert led off the inning with a single to right field.
Josh Sharp laid down a bunt single and a sacrifice bunt pushed both runners up 90 feet. However, a double play ended the frame. The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the inning for what turned out to be the lone run of the contest.
Parker registered his second base knock of the game in the seventh but was left stranded at second base. The Pacers threatened in the ninth as
Justin Byrd drew a one-out walk. Parker was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on base. Two fly ball outs ended the game.
Joel Haney worked seven innings. He had three strikeouts against one walk while giving up one run on five hits.
Austin Sandifer pitched the eighth inning and had two fly ball outs and a groundout.
In game two, USC Aiken trailed 1-0 in the top of the second but the team quickly knotted the score. Parker singled to center field and moved to second on a groundout. Two batters later,
Joseph Mozingo knocked Parker in with a base hit to left field.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Parker was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Blankenship's base hit to left field. Tripp laid down a sacrifice bunt, pushing each runner up 90 feet. Mozingo's groundout plated Parker to make it 3-2.
USC Aiken tied the game in the fifth when Byrd singled home
Jackson Hannon, who had previously singled and moved to second on the throw.
Tripp's solo round-tripper over the right center field to start the sixth gave the visitors a 4-3 lead, which proved to be the game-winning run.
Jacob Fletcher tossed seven innings for the win. He struck out four and gave up three runs on six hits.
Austin Sandifer worked the eighth and had two strikeouts while
Dylan Wilhelm threw the ninth inning to get the save.
