ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team placed five student-athletes in double figures in the 77-66 win at Flagler Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 15-9 on the season, including 9-5 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Annalise Malone's team-high 18 points. She also added six rebounds and two steals in the win.
Breanna Gustave accounted for 17 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Emily Trushel accounted for 11 points, seven boards and four steals.
Hailey Unger tallied 10 points, four rebounds and three assists while
Jentri Worley had a double-double with 10 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Trailing 7-4 near the midway point of the first quarter, Unger rattled home a jumper off a pass from
Kelsie Woodard. After a steal from
Delaney Trushel, Gustave converted a lay-up for a one-point lead. Woodard collected a rebound and put up a shot for a three-point margin, 10-7. Leading 13-12, Gustave found Hunger for a lay-up and a 15-12 advantage going into the second frame.
Miller's team trailed 21-18 but Malone answered with back-to-back baskets for a 22-21 lead at the 6:06 mark. Her third consecutive basket pushed the score to 24-21 and Gustave increased the margin to five, 26-21, with two free throws.
Down 27-26,
Emily Trushel found Malone for a lay-up, which started a run. Unger made two charity tosses before finding Worley for a lay-up to make it 32-27. Worley returned the favor and hit Unger for a three-point shot with 1:36 to go. Two free throws by Worley extended the margin to 37-27 en route to the 39-30 halftime score.
The Saints pulled within five, 49-44, with 4:10 left to play in the third quarter. Malone's two free throws pushed the margin back to seven at the 2:29 mark. Leading 54-46, a three-point shot by Flagler made it a 54-49 game entering the fourth quarter.
Flagler pulled within two at 59-57 with 7:32 to play but Worley answered the bell with a lay-up seconds later. Then,
Delaney Trushel canned a jumper for a six-point margin.
Leading by one, 63-62, Miller's team locked down the opposition while netting 12 of the next 14 points to put the game away. Gustave got things going with a basket.
Emily Trushel converted a pass from Worley for a bucket.
Delaney Trushel and Gustave notched back-to-back baskets for a 71-62 advantage with 2:11 to play.
After a pair of free throws by the Saints, Gustave made a lay-up. Two free throws by Worley and another lay-up – this time from
Emily Trushel – extended the advantage to 77-64 with 13 seconds on the clock.
For the game, Miller's squad nailed 28-of-73 from the floor (38.4 percent). The team was outstanding at the charity stripe, canning 17-of-18 (94.4 percent). USC Aiken outrebounded the home team 48-38, including 17-10 on the offensive glass. The Pacers had 16 assists on 28 field goals. The team registered 15 points off 16 turnovers and the 17 offensive boards led to 21 second-chance points.
