AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team lost a 3-2 decision to Shaw Saturday evening in front of a frenzied crowd.
The Pacers are now 1-7-1 on the season.
Just 14:01 into the match,
Lucas Pegorer sent a pass down the right side of the pitch to
Jose Rabadan. He promptly rocketed a shot past the keeper for the early 1-0 advantage.
Head coach
Ike Ofoje's team nearly made it 2-0 three minutes later.
Fabian Avila blasted an attempt from 20 yards out. It seemed destined to find the back of the net but it hit the post, leaving the score at 1-0 heading into intermission.
The Pacers controlled the early portion of the second half.
Michael Sokolik's shot at the 52:04 mark narrowly missed the frame. In the 58
th minute of action,
Wynston Johnson belted an attempt from 25 yards out. However, the keeper was able to stop it, keeping the contest at 1-0.
The Bears responded with three goals in less than five minutes for a 3-1 edge. The Pacers gained possession near the midfield stripe in the 73
rd minute. Pegorer found Harris down the right side of the pitch. Harris flicked a pass to Rabadan near the top of the box. One dribble later, Rabadan fired a shot past the keeper to make it 3-2.
The Pacers nearly knotted the match in the 84
th minute. Off a set piece, the ball was played across the box.
Parks Harris jumped up and headed the shot that missed the left side of the goal by inches. Pegorer's header with four minutes to go was thwarted by Shaw.
With just seconds remaining, Rabadan tried to tie the contest with a bicycle kick. However, his brilliant attempt missed, leaving the contest in a 3-2 decision for the visitors.
For the match, USC Aiken totaled 11 shots to 10 by the Bears. Rabadan had both goals. Harris added one assist while Pegorer had two.
Cason Donahue stopped two shots in the loss.
