AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team lost a 4-2 contest to Mars Hill Saturday afternoon in the home finale.
The Pacers are now 2-10-1 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 early in the first half, head coach
Ike Ofoje's team knotted the score in the 20
th minute of action. After relentless offensive pressure,
Fabian Avila took a corner kick. Off the set piece, he found
Diego Vega in the box. Vega one-timed it past the keeper, tying the match at 1-1 at the 19:27 mark.
Despite USC Aiken pushing forward and having multiple opportunities the rest of the period.
Tied at 1-1 early in the second stanza, USC Aiken was in the box and was fouled.
Wynston Johnson stepped up to take the penalty kick. With the keeper diving to the right of the goal, Johnson rocketed a shot to the left, giving the Pacers a 2-1 advantage.
The Pacers nearly went up 3-1 in the 58
th minute of play. When Vega gained possession on the left side of the pitch, he crossed up a defender and ripped an attempt toward the frame. It narrowly missed the back of the net as it hit the crossbar and deflected away from the goal.
In the 80
th minute, MHU had an advantage.
Cason Donahue made a save momentarily but the visitors regained possession and scored, once again tying the contest.
With just over two minutes to play, the Lions scored after a loose ball in the box. The visitors made it 4-2 with just over 30 seconds to go.
For the match, Donahue stopped three shots. Johnson and Vega each scored while Avila recorded an assist in the loss.
